Resident Evil reboot gets “horrifying” official synopsis before first trailer

Sony shared details about the plot of the new Resident Evil movie, directed by Zach Cregger, after showing off the first trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

It’s been five years since the last Resident Evil movie, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was based on the first two games from Capcom’s popular horror series.

For a long time, Resident Evil movies had been known for their intense action, especially the films starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson – a style that differed from the games. Now, director Craig Cregger is preparing to release his own Resident Evil movie later this year, and like those earlier films, it will feature a new story within the established universe. Cregger has mentioned being careful to create something that fans will enjoy.

Good news for fans: the first look at the upcoming Resident Evil reboot suggests a scary and intense experience, especially for actor Austin Abrams, known for his role in ‘Weapons’.

Austin Abrams plays a medical courier in the Resident Evil reboot

There’s been talk for a while that Austin Abrams is in the new Resident Evil movie as a medical courier, and the official description of the film now confirms it. He plays Bryan, a courier who gets caught up in a desperate fight for survival when a terrifying night unfolds around him.

Sony showed the first trailer for the new Resident Evil movie at CinemaCon on April 13th. While the trailer isn’t available online yet, details quickly emerged describing the footage, hinting that the main character’s delivery mission will be a nightmare.

According to Variety, the new Resident Evil trailer opens with Austin Abrams’ character discovering an abandoned house in the snow. He’s urgently searching for a working phone to call his girlfriend, and during the call, he fears they might not have another chance to speak.

The trailer is packed with frightening images of zombies, including one particularly gruesome, swollen monster found in a sewer. The most dramatic scene shows Abrams sprinting down an empty street, desperately trying to escape a large group of zombies pursuing him from the rooftops. The trailer concludes with a shocking display of zombie bodies crashing to the ground.

It’s obvious that David Cregger has a strong and unique idea for the new Resident Evil movie. While we wait for more details, check out our list of the most exciting films coming out in 2026.
