Resident Evil Movie Will Keep The Game World “Intact,” Says Director

Zach Cregger, the director of the new Resident Evil movie, has described it as an unusual story that won’t feature familiar characters like Leon Kennedy. However, he assures fans that the film will still take place within the established universe of the Resident Evil games.

Cregger explained to Entertainment Weekly that the story is completely new, but will definitely feel like something he’d create. It’s set within the ‘Resident Evil’ universe, but he doesn’t think fans of the games will be disappointed. He made sure to stay true to the source material, crafting a story that fits within the established ‘Resident Evil’ timeline while still honoring everything fans already enjoy about the games.

According to Cregger, Austin Abrams, known for his work in ‘Weapons,’ will play a major role in the ‘Resident Evil’ series. While details about his character are still under wraps, Cregger stated that Abrams is a perfect fit for the part.

J.J. Abrams might soon be working with Paul Walter Hauser, who is reportedly joining the cast. Filming for the new Resident Evil movie is scheduled to begin in Prague this October, and we can expect more actors to be announced shortly. The movie is currently set to be released in theaters on September 18, 2026.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Resident Evil game. To celebrate, Capcom will release Resident Evil 9: Requiem in February 2026, and also bring older Resident Evil titles to the new Switch 2 console.
