Resident Evil Movie Reboot Director Wants The Film To Feel Like The Games

Next year, Resident Evil will make a comeback in cinemas under the direction of Zach Cregger, known for his work on Barbarian and Weapons. In an interview, Cregger shared that his childhood playing the Resident Evil games and his passion for the Capcom series have significantly influenced his approach to this latest film adaptation.

In simpler terms, Cregger shared with ComicBook that he has completed every game in the series and particularly loves Resident Evil 4, having played it over a hundred times. He’s deeply passionate about this experience and wants his storytelling to reflect that passion, honoring the unique atmosphere of the games. While movies aren’t his preference, he believes the movie adaptation might not do justice to the original gameplay experience he cherishes so much.

Apart from one, all Resident Evil movies based on live action were helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson. These films bore only a passing resemblance to the video games, blending concepts from them with unique narratives revolving around Milla Jovovich’s character Alice. Director Cregger is not aiming to blindly adhere to the game’s lore but intends to respect the franchise’s fundamental rules. In an earlier interview this month, he stated that his interpretation would maintain a sense of authenticity to the gaming experience. In essence, he wants to narrate a tale that feels true to the feeling you get while playing the games.

In the world of video games, it has been announced that the upcoming installment of Resident Evil, titled “Resident Evil: Requiem,” is set to drop in February 2026. This game will transport players back to the remnants of Raccoon City for a chilling survival-horror adventure, and it’s planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In addition, a mobile spin-off game called “Resident Evil: Survival Unit” is currently being developed. Lastly, the Resident Evil film directed by Cregger is aiming for a September 18 release date in the following year.
