Zach Cregger, known for directing the popular horror films Barbarian and Weapons, recently discussed details about his next project: a Resident Evil movie.
In an interview with Fangoria, director Cregger explained that the new Resident Evil movie won’t simply retell the story of Leon S. Kennedy or feature any characters from the games. While set in the world of Resident Evil – specifically the universe of Resident Evil 2 – the film will be a completely original story.
So, I’m creating my own Resident Evil 2 story, and it’s happening alongside everything you experience in the game. You could play through the whole thing and not even realize my story is unfolding in the background, but trust me, it is! I’m sticking to the established rules of the Resident Evil universe, but I’m focusing on completely new characters – we already have plenty of iconic ones in the games themselves.
Cregger explained that his Resident Evil film draws inspiration from the worlds of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but its overall feel is closer to Resident Evil 4. It’s not a direct remake of any specific game, though.
Cregger pointed out that the video games themselves don’t have a strict, unchanging history or timeline. He believes the movie doesn’t stray any further from the source material than the games do, stating he’s ‘staying within the established boundaries.’
“I’ve never seen a movie like it,” he added. “I am beyond excited making this.”
The director explained that his style, developed while making Barbarian and Weapons, will be evident in the new Resident Evil film, but with a larger scope and increased resources.
The movie is set in the world of the Resident Evil games, but the experience of watching it will feel very similar to actually *playing* the games. The story follows a single character’s descent into hell, and as someone who’s spent thousands of hours playing, I believe that structure naturally lends itself to a cinematic feel. I think there’s a fantastic movie hidden within this world and its inherent pacing, and I’m incredibly excited about the story we’re telling.
Who is in the Resident Evil movie?
Although no official cast list has been released for the upcoming Resident Evil movie, rumors suggest Austin Abrams, known for his role in ‘Weapons,’ is likely to appear. Paul Walter Hauser is also potentially joining the cast.
When does Resident Evil start filming?
Director Paul W.S. Anderson has announced that filming for the new Resident Evil movie will start in Prague this October and wrap up by the end of January 2026. He explained that Prague was chosen due to financial incentives like tax breaks, making it a practical location for the production.
A Weapons prequel could come next
After finishing work on Resident Evil, Cregger has several ideas for future movies, including a prequel to ‘Weapons’ centered around the character Aunt Gladys. He’s been discussing the project with Warner Bros. and feels confident about the story he’s developed.
Next Resident Evil games
Fans can look forward to even more Resident Evil games, with Resident Evil: Requiem slated for release in February 2026. The next-generation Switch 2 will also be getting new Resident Evil ports around the same time.
