Resident Evil 4 Remake Scrapped An Opening Chapter Starring Ashley, Files Show

The beginning of Resident Evil 4 Remake was almost very different. Capcom cut a section, known as “Chapter 0,” where players would have played as Ashley and experienced her abduction by the Los Illuminados. A fan who explored the game’s files discovered evidence of this cut content.

So, this YouTuber, Thekempy, dug into the game’s files and found some leftover stuff from what looks like the original opening! Apparently, we would’ve started as Ashley, totally alone in a forest at night. She stumbled onto some creepy ritual being performed by the Los Illuminados. It’s actually a quick scene you can spot in one of the story trailers they released way back in October 2022 – it’s cool to see what could have been!

Having seen the sacrifice, Ashley would head towards the village center, likely using her phone’s light to find her way and avoid dangerous enemies called Ganado. As the chapter progressed, she’d run faster and faster, eventually witnessing the Ganado abduct Luis Serra.

Although the cutscenes for the removed chapter aren’t in the Resident Evil 4 remake’s game files, remnants like enemy placements, event triggers, save points, and blocked-off areas suggest what it would have been like.

Honestly, I’m still a little puzzled why they cut that opening chapter. It wasn’t in the original Resident Evil 4, and I’ve been reading that Thekempy thinks it was probably a pacing issue. Apparently, starting the game with Ashley sneaking around would have slowed things down, and everyone knows RE4 is all about constant action. It makes sense, I guess, but it’s still a bit weird to see content removed like that.

Capcom plans to continue reimagining classic Resident Evil titles. Rumors suggest remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are planned for release within the next few years. The remake of Resident Evil Zero is reportedly aiming to expand on the characters and story elements that were only hinted at in the original game.

The next major Resident Evil game, titled Resident Evil Requiem, will feature Leon S. Kennedy, a popular character from Resident Evil 4. Players will revisit Raccoon City, the iconic setting for the original games in the series. Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled to launch on February 27th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
