Republic Pictures Acquires 1972 Munich Olympics Drama ‘September 5,’ Starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch (EXCLUSIVE)

As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for historical dramas that explore pivotal moments in world history, I am thrilled to learn about Paramount’s acquisition of “September 5.” The film’s connection to the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics and its all-star cast, including Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch, immediately piqued my interest.

As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned some exciting news about “September 5.” This intriguing film, helmed by director Tim Fehlbaum, will soon be gracing the big screens around the world – excluding Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The global sales rights have been acquired by Paramount’s Republic Pictures for distribution.

The movie, featuring Sean Penn as a producer, is set to debut in the Horizons Extra competition segment of the Venice Film Festival on August 29th. Last year, Sarsgaard received the Best Actor award at Venice for his role in “Memory.”

The story takes place during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics on September 5. It focuses on an American sports broadcasting team who shifted gears from usual sports reporting to real-time coverage as they unexpectedly witnessed the kidnapping of Israeli athletes.

Viewed through this perspective, September 5 offers a fresh outlook on the live event watched by approximately one billion people around the world. This film reveals the pivotal moment that transformed media reporting and still influences live news today, as stated.

In the core of the tale is Geoff, a young and driven producer eager to make an impression on his boss, the esteemed TV magnate Roone Arledge. Unexpectedly finding himself in charge, Geoff teams up with Marianne, a German interpreter, during the live broadcast.

When the storyline changes and time presses on, with the hostages’ lives at stake and conflicting rumors swirling around, I find myself faced with difficult choices as I grapple with my own moral compass. But how do I report on such a situation when the perpetrators seek the very attention I aim to avoid giving them?

Moritz Binder and Fehlbaum penned the script, while Philipp Trauer, Thomas Wöbke, Fehlbaum, Penn, John Ira Palmer, and John Wildermuth were in charge of production.

September 5 is a collaborative production between BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Penn’s Projected Picture Works, with Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion also contributing.

Martin Moszkowicz and Christoph Müller serve as the executive producers. Constanze Guttmann, Rüdiger Böss, Christian Reitz, and Geoffrey Mason are credited as co-producers.

The film was shot on a sound stage and original locations in Munich last year.
