Nicolas Cage is set to become the oldest actor to play Spider-Man in a live-action film. He’ll surpass Tobey Maguire, who was 46 when he appeared in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cage will be 62 when Spider-Noir premieres on Amazon Prime Video on May 25th.
According to Marvel and Esquire, the showrunner for Spider-Noir, Oren Uziel, shared that they needed an older, more cynical Spider-Man to tell the story they envisioned. He explained that “Peter Parker often feels like a typical high school student,” and they wanted to move away from that for a darker take.
“Peter Parker feels very synonymous with a high school kid. Boyish. On his way up.”
Producer Chris Miller explained that Nicolas Cage’s character, Ben Reilly—known to comic book fans as a Spider-Man clone—is portrayed as a world-weary and cynical man who isn’t hesitant to get into a fistfight, even when intoxicated.
Okay, so this version of Peter Parker? Totally different from the ones we’re used to seeing on screen. He’s not that fresh-faced kid anymore; he’s older, a bit beaten down by life, and honestly? He’s not afraid to throw a punch – even if he’s had a few drinks. It’s a much grittier take on the character.
Producer Phil Lord also mentioned that Ben experienced a harsh awakening about the film industry a long time ago – a moment he described as his “Chinatown disillusionment.”
As Uziel put it, Ben Reilly “has seen it all:”
Ben Reilly has already dealt with everything and is trying to move on with his life. However, his past continues to resurface, but in a way we haven’t encountered before.
Nicolas Cage will star as Ben Reilly in the new series Spider-Noir, coming to MGM+ and Prime Video. The show will be released in both black-and-white and color versions.
