Renée Victor, Who Voiced Abuelita In Disney’s ‘Coco,’ Dies

Actress Renée Victor, most recognized for portraying Abuelita in the hit Disney animation “Coco” and Lupita on the Showtime series “Weeds,” has passed away.

The news of Victor’s death was confirmed by her representative.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Victor ventured from the Lone Star State to Los Angeles during the ’60s to kick-start her budding career in entertainment. In the world of music, she initially found success as a singer for well-known groups. On the side, she was an instructor of salsa and tango dance. Victor played a significant role in introducing prominent Latin musicians such as Perez Prado and Xavier Cugat to American music enthusiasts.

Between 1963 and 1973, Renee added a unique touch to the world of Latin music while performing alongside her spouse, under the name “Ray & Renee.

Among her initial significant TV performances was when she hosted the KTLA show “Pacesetters,” which chronicled the Chicano Movement of the 70s. Subsequently, she moved towards film and television roles and became a member of the Screen Actors Guild in 1973. Some of her early works can be seen on shows like “Matlock” and “Scarecrow and Mrs. King.” In movies, she has acted in films such as “A Night in Old Mexico,” “The Doctor,” and “The Apostle.

Among her television roles, she’s also been featured on shows like “The Addams Family” cartoon, “The Tony Danza Show,” “Team Knight Rider,” “Four Corners,” “ER,” “House of Payne,” “Children’s Hospital,” and the TV adaptation of “Snowpiercer.” In films, she has acted in “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit,” “Stuntmen,” “SuperFly,” “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” and “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
