The refreshed Turok received an unexpected update and hit new platforms.
Apart from diligently working on the eagerly anticipated remaster of System Shock 2, Nightdive Studios has surprisingly delved back into one of their earlier projects – none other than the iconic game, Turok.
Back in 2015, I got my hands on this game, and three years later, it was upgraded to version 2.0, making us think that was the peak of its development. But then, out of nowhere, Nightdive Studios dropped a new update that transported Turok into the latest iteration of the Kex engine, bringing along a slew of enhancements. Quite a surprise, wasn’t it?
The list of modifications (which can be found on Steam and Reddit) isn’t brief and encompasses enhancements for general use as well as those tailored to particular platforms. To start, Turok has now been made natively playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the game is compatible with screens that have a higher refresh rate.
In addition to that, the developers successfully retrieved and safeguarded brachiosaurs from Turok’s beta version (located on the Treetops level), and they also included the original feature where you can transition between walking and running without any extra steps. Furthermore, various updates that have been well-received by gamers have been incorporated. While this isn’t a major update like the anniversary patches for the Half-Life series, it exceeds what players had anticipated after 6 years since the game’s development concluded.
Although it’s great that there’s a new remastered version of Turok, some users might find an issue with compatibility when loading their old save files due to the numerous changes made. A potential workaround involves using Steam’s “Beta” feature and switching to the older Kex3 Engine version, but keep in mind that you won’t have access to cloud saves if you do this.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that two remastered installments of the revamped trilogy are now playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The anticipation is high among us fans, hoping with all our hearts that Turok 2 will follow suit, receiving a major update and making its grand entrance as a native game for ninth-generation consoles.
