Refugee Crisis, Police Harassment Tackled in New Mountain’s Latest Pickups ‘My Brother Ali’ and ‘Freedom Way’ (EXCLUSIVE)

I’m thrilled to share my excitement about up-and-coming independent film distributor, New Mountain Films. They are expanding their portfolio of North American releases by acquiring not one, but two new productions!

The Toronto-based production company has acquired the rights to two captivating works: “Freedom Way,” a Nigerian drama helmed by Afolabi Olalekan, and “My Brother Ali,” a documentary produced by Paula Palacios, which follows a Somali refugee’s inspiring immigration story.

The narrative tapestry of ‘Freedom Way’ intertwines several plot threads, chronicling the journeys of diverse characters: from startup entrepreneurs confronting police persecution, to a motorbike taxi driver wrestling with his destiny, and two policemen grappling with ethical quandaries.”

Or alternatively,

“In ‘Freedom Way’, various storylines are skillfully interconnected, portraying the struggles of startup founders subjected to police harassment, a motorcycle taxi driver, a tormented doctor, and two police officers as they grapple with moral predicaments.

In “My Brother Ali,” Palacios chronicles a ten-year journey that started when she encountered the main character, a Somali refugee named Ali, in a detention center in Ukraine in 2012. This intimate documentary takes us across several nations and delves into themes of perseverance and relocation amidst the broader context of the worldwide refugee predicament.

The pickups are keeping up the progress for New Mountain, a company that was established last year by experienced industry figure, Khaled Sabbour.

Sabbour stated that these movies represent the type of narrative that New Mountain deeply cares for – genuine, universally appealing, and frequently underestimated by major distributors. We take pride in sharing these unique perspectives with viewers right across North America.

Sabbour arranged both agreements, with Bluhouse Studios acting on behalf of “Freedom Way” and Morada Films managing “My Brother Ali.

The distributor, who proudly champions “powerful, socially relevant narratives,” has been proactively fostering ties with filmmakers and championing underrepresented perspectives since its debut in 2024.

In their initial purchase, the company acquired the 2024 Toronto selection of “The Courageous,” directed by Jasmin Gordon, which previously won two awards in Zurich. This Switzerland-based film follows a single mother’s struggle to provide a secure life for her three children and will be released on April 18th.
