Reddit Ruined Spider-Man’s Epic Reunion?

It’s no secret that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s roles in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” were highly anticipated, possibly even number one on the list of well-guessed cinematic events. Leaks, whispers, and stolen set photos had hinted for a while that these actors would return to play Spiderman, long after their individual film series had concluded. What was left unclear beforehand, though, was how their Peter Parkers would be woven into the narrative revolving around Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. As it happens, director Jon Watts had to modify Maguire and Garfield’s initial scenes due to some sharp deductions on Reddit.

At the Mediterranea Film Festival, Watts discussed both his decision to step away from directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps and his work on assembling three Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Moderated by Steven Weintraub of Collider, he revealed that during filming, the return of Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man characters had been a topic of speculation. He then went on to explain how the script’s final portion was enhanced with additional details.

As we crafted the script, we pondered over the dramatic moment when we’d unveil the characters, and it felt like Peter would be mourning the loss of Aunt May since she had recently passed away. Additionally, the portals were expected to open, allowing two Spider-Men to emerge. The setting was typically a rooftop, but the details were still blurry as we continued to refine the scene.

With the disappointing absence of Spider-Man: No Way Home on Disney+, consider subscribing to their streaming service to enjoy the rest of Tom Holland’s MCU journey. You can opt for their new ad-supported plan at just $9.99 per month. If you prefer an ad-free experience, it’ll cost you $15.99 monthly, or save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Initially, the scenario appears intriguing. At a particularly challenging moment for Tom Holland’s character, Peter Parker, his older counterparts unexpectedly appeared from different dimensions, although their arrivals were subtly concealed to keep viewers guessing about their identities. However, Jon Watts discovered during filming that some fans on Reddit had already speculated about this very scene, as he explained.

Initially, I found myself browsing Reddit, where fans had already created artwork depicting what might occur when the two Spider-Men are unveiled. The scene was set on a rooftop and was rather poignant, as two Doctor Strange portals were open and two Spider-Men were exiting. I found myself thinking, ‘Given that this is likely everyone’s expectation, it’s something we positively can’t do.’

Given the widespread impact of the portals scene in Avengers: Endgame, it’s no wonder some dedicated Marvel Cinematic Universe fans anticipated a similar event in Spider-Man: No Way Home. After all, great minds often think alike. However, director Jon Watts chose to avoid predictability, opting instead for an unexpected twist. Instead of the characters appearing at random locations, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parkers emerged from portals, in that order, right at Ned’s grandma’s house. Tom Holland’s Peter still met them, but they accompanied Ned and MJ to a rooftop this time around.

Despite the way they initially connected possibly evolving, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” successfully accomplished its objective by bringing together the three big-screen Spider-Men to fight an array of iconic adversaries. As for whether the Three Peters will team up again in the future is yet unknown, but fans can look forward to rejoining Tom Holland’s Spidey when the next Spider-Man movie titled “Brand New Day” hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
