Reddit has chosen to hide the number of members in specific communities (subreddits) and instead emphasize statistics that show user activity. This modification is intended to provide a more accurate representation of genuine interaction on the platform.
Earlier, the count of subscribers for a subreddit was visible either below the subreddit’s description on desktop versions or beneath its title on mobile applications.
The original figure has been substituted with two pieces of data: the number of individuals who visited the subreddit within the last seven days, and the count of contributions made by those visitors during that same timeframe. Reddit adopts this strategy to present a more vivid image of activity, as numerous users might browse posts without actively contributing content.
They pointed out that the number of members doesn’t always give a complete picture. Generally speaking, individuals don’t need to join a community to contribute by posting or commenting, hence the total membership count doesn’t necessarily reflect genuine activity levels.
Moderator limits tied to new visitor counts
As a gamer, I’ve noticed an update that affects how things are managed on this gaming-related subreddit (or any other community on Reddit I moderate). From now on, I can only oversee up to five communities where at least 100,000 users drop by each week. Communities with fewer visitors won’t be included in this limit, and it seems like only a tiny fraction of active moderators will even notice the change (less than 0.1%).
Reddit is transitioning from displaying subscriber numbers on subreddits towards presenting fresh measurements, with the goal of illustrating a subreddit’s activity level. This shift takes into account that some subscribers may browse without participating actively.

Moderators now retain the ability to see the total number of subscribers in subreddit statistics, whereas regular users no longer have this access. The revelation of this change on r/modnews has sparked dissatisfaction among many Reddit users. However, Reddit asserts that the updated system places more emphasis on active participation.
One user expressed, “I’m comfortable with keeping the subscriber count, weekly visitor numbers, and mod contribution statistics visible to everyone, but not sure if we should make those private. I believe maintaining things as they are is the best course of action.
As a gamer, I strongly feel that the removal of the member count from my subreddit is not a wise decision. Personally, I find it more informative to know the number of members rather than just focusing on contributions and visitors. It seems counterintuitive to me to omit such an essential piece of information.
This adjustment mirrors YouTube’s past decision to hide likes, a feature you can now access again via a browser extension that provides the necessary details.
