As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that the long-awaited release of Red Dead Redemption on PC has truly been a delight for me and fellow fans who have been yearning for this moment since 2010. The quality of the port is commendable, running smoothly at high resolutions, which is a relief given its $49 price tag.

After a long wait of more than 14 years since its initial release in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Red Dead Redemption, developed by Rockstar Games, has now been launched for PC. Previously, the game was also released on Nintendo Switch and PS4 in 2023. This means that enthusiasts of both Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, can re-immerse themselves in the Wild West, filled with outlaws and criminals, on their preferred gaming platform.

Enthusiasts are commending the caliber of the port on platforms like Steam Discussions and various forums. They’ve observed that it operates flawlessly at a high frame rate of 144 fps and stunning 4K resolution, which is encouraging considering the game’s substantial $49 price point on Steam, initially causing some apprehension. At least now it’s evident that the game performs well given its cost. However, as anticipated, modders have already begun enhancing the game – mods were released just a day after launch, providing an extra incentive for PC gamers. Hereafter, we present our list of 10 mods to elevate your RDR gaming experience even more.

RDR mods

The mods listed below are primarily visual, enhancing graphics, updating John’s outfits, and some even improve the technical aspects of the game—provided you have a good PC to handle them. These mods should work smoothly with the current version of the game and are all available on Nexus Mods.

  1. Simple Sharpening – a mod that adds a simple texture sharpening. Nothing special but it will make your game look better.
  2. Black Gentleman Suit – a simple mod that turns the white suit into a black one. Having an option to change your look is always good.
  3. Wheeler Rawson and Co High Quality Weapon Wheel – a mod that includes updated images for all weapons from the base game and Undead Nightmare, at a resolution 3x the size of the vanilla images, in the style of classic store product catalog illustrations.
  4. FPS Unlock – a mod that changes the 144 fps cap to 1000.
  5. RDR2 Button Prompts – a mod that replaces the new Xbox 360 button prompts with RDR2’s Xbox One button prompt. Something for fans of better user interface.
  6. Anti-Stutter – High CPU and Disk Priority – RDR – another simple mod that enables High CPU and Disk Priority for the RDR executable, which can improve performance on lower-end CPUs and slower disks. It helps reduce stuttering across all CPUs and disks.
  7. RDR Reimagined – a mod that revamps graphics in RDR. It improves lighting, color grading, post processing, and more.
  8. RDR 2 Cowboy Suit – a mod that retextures the cowboy suit with the RDR2 cowboy suit. John in Arthur’s clothing? Why not…
  9. RDR2 Style Map for RDR – a mod that introduces a more readable map.
  10. Fast Launch (Skip Startup Logo Videos) – a mod that makes the game launch faster by automatically skipping Rockstar Games and Double Eleven video logos. We even have something for the least patience.

How to install RDR mods

To ensure proper installation of the mentioned mods, I strongly advise you to thoroughly read each mod’s description on Nexus Mods. Given that Red Dead Redemption was released yesterday and there are various methods to install mods, it might take a while before we see a straightforward, efficient method. Therefore, let’s exercise patience for now. For certain mods, all you need to do is:

  1. Use the MagicRDR.exe and open up the file Steam\steamapps\common\Red Dead Redemption\game\mapres.RPF.
  2. And then find the file in the mod folder and right click and replace the files with the once provided in the mod.

However, keep in mind that this way isn’t universal and there might be other options to install a mod, like, for instance to simply place the contents of given mod on the root folder of the game and replace the files if asked to.
