Rebel Moon 3 Faces Uncertain Future as Writer Reveals Major Details

One of the creators for the upcoming movie trilogy titled “Rebel Moon 3” has shared the necessary conditions for Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi series to expand further. The initial two Rebel Moon films, scheduled to release in December 2023 and August 2024, were envisioned as a potential new blockbuster franchise rivaling franchises such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek. In light of this ambition, Snyder has expressed intentions for up to six films within this universe, along with books, video games, and various other multimedia projects.

In a recent conversation, Kurt Johnstad (co-writer of ‘Rebel Moon’) shared insights about the current status of the franchise and what could potentially trigger a third film. Although Zack Snyder has ambitious plans for an expansive new franchise from his work on ‘300’ and ‘Watchmen’, the future of this series following the second release last year, titled ‘Rebel Moon—Chalice of Blood‘, is uncertain.

In a recent installment of the “I Minutemen” podcast, Johnstad made an appearance, delving into his contributions to initiatives such as “Rebel,” discussing potential developments in the show’s continuation.

Speaking about Zack Snyder-directed films, particularly Rebel Moon’s writer disclosed that there were elaborate plans for “movies 3, 4, 5, and 6.” Unfortunately, he isn’t very optimistic about these plans ever being produced.

We have meticulously drafted detailed plans for movies 3, 4, 5, and 6. Zack has mapped out an intricate global scenario for these films. We have a clear idea of where our story can take us. Previously, the second movie focused on the search for the princess, while the third one emphasizes her being in the rightful position, seated on the throne, governing effectively over the Mother World.

He stated that there’d have to be “a bit of good fortune and a miraculous event” for them to return to that universe.

“With some luck and an act of God, we’ll get to go back to that world.”

Previously, I shared back in July 2024 that I had begun crafting the script for the third film and was optimistic about our chances of carrying on with these narratives, expressing hopes that we would be “fortunate enough to keep telling these stories.” However, it appears my sentiments have shifted since then.

In simple terms, “Rebel Moon” is a story reminiscent of Star Wars, focusing on a distant colony facing danger from the tyrannical Regent Balisariu and his military forces in space. Initiated for Netflix by the director of “Man of Steel,” Zack Snyder, this sci-fi universe debuted with its first two films in 2023 and 2024. The future direction of the series beyond these initial installments is yet to be determined.

Will Rebel Moon 3 Ever Happen?

As the anniversary for the last installment of “Rebel Moon” draws near, it appears that the prospects for “Rebel Moon 3” are becoming increasingly slim. Despite the initial plans for the franchise to span multiple media platforms and rival the scale of Star Wars, it seems unlikely that it will ever attain such heights.

Initially, the first two “Rebel Moon” movies received negative reviews, garnering only 22% and 16% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It appears that Zack Snyder, Netflix, and their team did not receive the desired response, considering the significant financial investment made in the initial two films. Reportedly, these movies were Netflix’s most costly original productions to date, with a combined budget of a staggering $166 million.

If the initial two movies had been released, received widespread praise, and proved successful, then the investment made by the streaming service could have seemed justified. However, since they’ve been launched and each failed to make a significant impact (landed with a soft thud), it appears unlikely that Netflix would be eager to revisit the Rebel Moon project in the near future.
