In June, Ready or Not‘s developer, VOID Interactive, received criticism for modifying the game to meet console certification standards. The developer has maintained that these adjustments do not significantly affect the game’s violent content or its dark atmosphere, but rather are minor changes made to conform with other platforms’ requirements. Following the controversy, VOID Interactive has issued a statement explaining in detail what specific content has been changed, even providing “before” and “after” visuals to demonstrate alterations.
In essence, Ready or Not’s gunfights remain unaltered. You can still amputate enemies with bullets, and there’s still a generous amount of gore. However, dismembering dead enemies is no longer an option. Meanwhile, other updates have removed nudity, modified a questionable reference to child exploitation, and replaced a seizing NPC with a sleeping one. The statement clarifies that the intensity of violence and gore, crucial to the game’s realistic feel, hasn’t been diluted. They’ve only made adjustments where necessary, adhering strictly to regulations but not going beyond them.
The game’s negative reception hasn’t stopped the wave of criticism. A segment of the player base has persisted in giving low ratings to Ready or Not. Despite maintaining a high overall rating of “very positive,” recent reviews have dropped significantly to “mostly negative.” Several critics argue that the updates have significantly altered the game’s mood, with one stating, “It now resembles just another common tactical shooter, burdened by awkward AI and bereft of the unique atmosphere it once possessed.” Other reviewers find the controversy absurd, with one suggesting the dissatisfied players to “go outside for fresh air.
In the ongoing Steam Summer Sale, you can still grab Ready or Not at a discount! The core game costs just $25, while a package that includes DLC goes for $39. Excitingly, the game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S starting July 15.
