Previously, Nvidia introduced tools enabling modders to develop unofficial upgrades of vintage video games. One of the earliest initiatives leveraging these tools is the Need for Speed: Underground RTX Remastered. This modification has just been updated to version 0.4.1.
The standout feature of Nvidia’s tools lies in their capability to incorporate ray tracing into older games, such as in this mod for ‘Need for Speed: Underground’. This technology has been utilized extensively to rejuvenate a substantial part of the game’s lighting, and an additional 1,000 lights have been strategically placed across maps to intensify the effect. Yet, these enhancements are only the beginning, as further modifications have also been made to the game.
- The mod also replaces many textures with new, high-resolution versions.
- Since version 0.2.1, the process of gradually improving car models has begun—while this effort is far from complete, the already implemented new versions look noticeably better.
In the latest update, version 0.4.1, we’ve added features such as DLSS 4, enhanced volumetric fog, and particle effects for a more immersive experience. We’ve also worked on refining building textures to give them a more rugged appearance.
The transformation is quite remarkable, given it’s the work of a solo enthusiast (Alessandro893). While there are areas that need further polish, and some original components are yet to be upgraded, the mod offers an enticing choice for fans of Need for Speed: Underground. The project thrives on the fact that it’s set in cities at night, which makes it perfect for employing ray tracing. The mod effectively leverages this advantage, creating a captivating experience.
It’s noteworthy that there are other fan-created remakes of Need for Speed: Underground besides the one with ray-traced visuals. If you dislike these graphics or don’t have a powerful enough computer to run them, you might want to explore the older Definitive Edition mod. This collection of smaller projects significantly enhances various aspects of this classic game, including textures, models, and lighting.
