As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for Japanese art-house films, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming release of “Ravens.” The film’s unique concept, the star-studded cast, and the pedigree of its director, Mark Gill, who has previously garnered Oscar and BAFTA nominations, promise a cinematic experience that is both thought-provoking and visually stunning.
International distributor K5 has joined forces with us for global distribution of the movie “Ravens,” which stars Tadanobu Asano, who was nominated for an Emmy in “Shogun,” and Kumi Takuichi.
The movie is helmed by Mark Gill, a director renowned for the Morrissey biopic “England Is Mine” (2017) and the short film “The Voorman Problem” (2011), both of which received nominations for the Oscars and BAFTAs.
International production company K5 will unveil the movie “Ravens” in a unique showing at the Toronto Film Festival and mark its first presentation to audiences worldwide at the Austin Film Festival towards the end of October – a fact that was first revealed by EbMaster exclusively.
The movie portrays the stormy love triangle involving the unconventional Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase, his model and spouse Yoko, and Fukase’s Art, represented as an eight-foot tall talking raven. As described, “Ravens” tenderly, playfully, and powerfully delivers emotional blows, tracing the highs, lows, and casualties of a life dedicated to artistic pursuit.”
The movie was jointly made by Vestapol, Ark Entertainment, Minded Factory, Katsize Films, and The Y House Films, in partnership with Teamo Production HQ LTD (TPHQ) and Townhouse Media Filmworks. The production team includes Orian Williams, Cyril Cadars, Megumi Fukasawa Ishii, Gill, Hideki Kawamura, Hiroyasu Nagata, David Barrera, Johanna Horn, Mohaan Naader, Nitsa Benchetrit, Henry Gillet, and Sam Fayed.
Daniel Baur, CEO of K5 Intl., commented: “Tadanobu Asano and Kumi Takiuchi give a captivating portrayal that breathes new life into the profound, heartbreaking, and timeless love tale of Masahisa and Yoko. We are excited to collaborate with the highly skilled director Mark Gill and share his film with audiences globally.”
“The first time I came across Fukase’s photographs, I immediately felt the brilliance they represented and developed an eagerness to learn about the person behind the lens. It wasn’t long before I realized later that Fukase’s’selimited, Fukase’s story was inextricly’s and Yoko, his wife and wife, who was more than a mere collaborator, Yoko, Fuko, my preference, and I wouldn’t call her as the muse, she was not a simple rephotionsed by Gill, but also” are just as well as key elements of Fukase to tell his story. Gill said Gill.”
“But could I, a Japanophile Brit, recreate these lives and the postwar Shōwa art scene they inhabited? Might my outsider’s eye afford an objectivity to offset my foreignness?
“Conquering these challenges has been no easy feat, but I must express my gratitude to the talented cast and crew who expertly steered my choices throughout this project. Crafting ‘Ravens’ in the sweltering Tokyo summer was nothing short of enchanting, and I find myself inordinately proud of what we collectively accomplished.” (Movie Critic speaking)
Beyond his acclaimed portrayal in FX’s “Shōgun,” Asano is also recognized for his acting in the Marvel “Thor” series, “Harmonium” which won the Cannes Un Certain Regard jury prize in 2016, and the iconic “Ichi the Killer” (2001).
Takiuchi, the actress portraying Yoko in “Ravens,” was featured in “A Balance,” which received the prestigious New Currents Award for Best Film at Busan in 2020.
The film titled “Ravens” is set to be publicly screened in Japan during March 2025, courtesy of Ark Entertainment. Meanwhile, French audiences can expect to see it in theaters come Spring 2025.
Last year, K5 International was re-introduced to the scene by Baur with a fresh group of team members. Their first project in their new portfolio is Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga.” The initial installment debuted at Cannes last year and was distributed by Warner Bros./New Line during the summer months. On Saturday, the world premiere of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” will take place at the Venice Film Festival.
