Rats Are Coming for You

One effective method to instill fear in audiences through horror movies is by making scenes appear realistically possible. Nothing is more terrifying than events that could potentially occur in everyday life. For instance, the Final Destination film series presents numerous ways people might meet their end during ordinary activities. Clowns, sharks, anacondas, and other creatures associated with horror can be quite unsettling – a testament to the genre’s creativity. It seems that Hollywood is continuously brainstorming new ideas in this regard.

Notably, Lionsgate and producer Paul Brooks, known for Pitch Perfect, are currently working on a horror film centered around rats. Given New York City’s notoriety for having a large rat population, it seems fitting to set the movie there. This killer rat infestation movie will redefine “the city that never sleeps.

As reported by Variety, Lionsgate and producer Brooks have teamed up to acquire global rights for the upcoming survival horror movie titled “Rats!”.

In 2020, Strauss-Schulson was associated with the popular short film titled “Rat“. It’s possible that this film served as a source of inspiration for his upcoming project. However, according to Variety, the storyline seems dissimilar, focusing on a desperate race against time to halt an unprecedented rat infestation that threatens the world. The director collaborated with Paul Sado on the script, who has previously written the Netflix animation feature “Leo“, starring Adam Sandler and Bill Burr. Jason Fuchs (FiveTen Productions) and Adam Fishbach (Fishbach Productions) will also produce, along with Brooks, for this upcoming project.

Previously, both creators have dabbled in horror productions. Fuchs, specifically, served as co-creator and co-showrunner for HBO’s upcoming series Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the popular It. Meanwhile, Fishbach held an executive producer role on Smile, which follows a psychiatrist who becomes convinced she’s being haunted by a mysterious entity after a chilling encounter with a patient. The horror film Prey for the Devil, produced by Brooks (under Lionsgate), revolves around a nun who undergoes exorcist training within the Roman Catholic Church and faces off against demonic possession. This production garnered $44 million at the box office.

How Many Killer Rats Movies Are There?

Film adaptations can take even the most outlandish ideas and make them into reality, with some extraordinary plots becoming blockbuster hits, while others fail to resonate. Interestingly, it’s not unheard of for animals such as rodents and insects to play sinister roles in horror films. In fact, there is a subgenre dedicated to portraying rats as violent creatures. Two notable examples of this are the movies “Willard” (1971) and its sequel, “Ben” (1972). The former revolves around an outcast character who enlists the help of his rat friends for revenge against his tormentors, while the latter centers on Ben, the leader of the rats, as he stars in his own film a year later.
