Rampaging elephant kills 20 as officials urge villagers to stay indoors

Officials in eastern India are advising people to remain inside their homes after a lone elephant reportedly killed around 20 people in the last ten days. The elephant is still roaming free and considered dangerous.

A terrifying start to the year 2026 occurred in Chaibasa, India, when a young male elephant attacked and injured villagers on New Year’s Day.

Over the next few days, the creature continued to destroy areas nearby, resulting in at least 20 deaths, according to The Independent. The report states that children and older adults were among those killed.

Okay, so TMZ is reporting something seriously messed up happened in Babaria. Apparently, this huge, tusked creature just… walked into a village and trampled a family – a couple and their two kids – while they were sleeping. It’s just awful, they didn’t even stand a chance.

Authorities tried to calm the elephant and stop its attacks, but they kept failing. Sadly, the elephant even killed an experienced animal expert who was brought in to help, increasing the number of deaths.

Okay, so everyone’s saying this creature is totally erratic – you can’t predict what it’s going to do next! No one really knows why it’s acting so weird, but some people think it might be something like an elephant in musth. Apparently, that’s when a male’s testosterone goes crazy high, and they get super aggressive. It’s like, a hormonal rage, basically. Makes it even harder to strategize against, you know?

According to Chaibasa’s divisional forest officer, Aditya Narayan, the elephant’s movements have been unpredictable. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the elephant in the last four days, and it hasn’t been spotted recently, according to a statement.

Okay, so this elephant is going totally rogue, and honestly, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in the game before. I’ve played a ton, and I just don’t recall any single elephant acting like this – it’s completely new!

I’m really relieved to hear that everyone’s working together to find this elephant and keep people safe. Apparently, officials are joining forces with locals to track it down and prevent any further tragedies. CBS News said they’re even using drones to search the forests – it’s good they’re using technology to try and spot it from above!

According to village leader Pratap Chachar, people are leaving their homes and farms because they’re afraid, but local police remain to provide assistance.

Honestly, it’s been days since anyone’s seen that monster, and everyone around here is starting to think maybe, just maybe, it’s finally gone. We’re all hoping this nightmare is finally over.

As human settlements expand into wild areas, elephants and other animals are encountering people more often. For example, a California brown bear recently took up residence under houses in an Altadena neighborhood, highlighting this growing issue.
