Ralph Macchio is popular for the “Karate Kid” trilogy (available on your Hulu subscription) along with its Netflix spin-off series “Cobra Kai” and “Karate Kid: Legends”. But that doesn’t mean he’s neglected his ’90s hits like “My Cousin Vinny”, as a memento from the movie still lingers. The actor recounted an intriguing tale about saving an untouched can of tuna from the courtroom comedy, and I hope he follows his own counsel and keeps it sealed.
In the movie “My Cousin Vinny,” streaming on Peacock, Bill Gambini (played by Ralph Macchio) along with his friend Stan, overlooked paying for a can of tuna they pocketed from a convenience store. As they were leaving in their car, the police pulled them over, and Bill assumed he was being arrested for shoplifting. However, it turned out that they weren’t just accused of stealing; they were suspected of murdering the store clerk. This misunderstanding led to them seeking help from their inexperienced cousin, who happened to be a personal injury lawyer.
It’s interesting to note that Ralph Macchio didn’t stray too far from his character’s actions when it comes to shoplifting, at least in the case of a specific unopened can of tuna from the movie “My Cousin Vinny”. During an appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark”, the actor confessed that he had actually stolen this very can, which is now “somewhere in my house.” Although Macchio has the canned tuna, he offered a word of wisdom to himself that I hope he follows:
But, we don’t need to open that. Bought it in 1991, whenever it was!
Surprisingly, it appears that the prop of a canned tuna wasn’t just an empty container after all; it had 34-year-old fish inside. I find this quite disgusting! Tuna already has a foul odor, so it seems only logical for aged tuna to remain securely locked within the metal can.
Previously, in March at PaleyFest, Ralph Macchio mentioned discussions about revisiting “My Cousin Vinny.” He emphasized the importance of finding a clever approach for any potential sequel or remake. Although it might be challenging to recapture the charm of one of the most memorable ’90s comedies, I’d be willing if the follow-up maintained the witty humor that made the original film so enjoyable. For instance, imagine if Bill Gambini confessed in the sequel that he had kept the stolen can of tuna from 1991 all this time – now wouldn’t that be hilarious?
Similar to how Kelly Ripa expressed it, Ralph Macchio could consider establishing a museum displaying props from his films, including the untouched can of tuna. As long as that three-decade-old tuna remains unopened within its can, everything should be fine. Catch this gifted actor demonstrating his karate prowess once more in the 2025 big-screen release of The Karate Kid: Legends. Enjoy it now in cinemas!
