Ralph Macchio Hints at More Karate Kid Adventures After Legends!

Ralph Macchio has had an extraordinary journey portraying Daniel LaRusso since the debut of the Karate Kid franchise back in 1984, when he was still in his twenties. Now, at 63 years old, it’s possible that fans haven’t seen the last of him stepping into those famous Daniel shoes again.

In the film “Karate Kid: Legends,” Macchio joins forces with Jackie Chan, who starred in the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid.” This movie is set to pay tribute to its predecessors and the popular Netflix series “Cobra Kai,” which chronicles Daniel’s transformation into a mentor. During an interview, Macchio expressed his thoughts on possibly reprising the role that has become synonymous with him.

Macchio clarified his choice to make a new movie rather than abandoning Daniel. “Since I was deeply involved in Cobra Kai and we were yet to wrap up the story, I desired to understand where Legends would fit into Daniel LaRusso’s narrative and personal growth,” he explained. “Once we ascertained it was three years later and his character in the series had evolved into a more mature version of himself amidst a midlife crisis brought on by the Cobra Kai soap opera, there is an aspect of him embodying more Miyagi-like qualities and passing down his legacy to a child who requires his guidance.

The character portrayed by Ben Wang, named Li Fong, is a teenager seeking direction as he prepares for a fresh karate competition and faces his family’s heartrending history. Mr. Han, played by Chan, and Daniel offer guidance to help Li grow into a potential champion and deal with his past. Macchio believes that blending these two aspects of the Karate Kid universe creates a sense of authenticity and pays tribute to the entire franchise’s legacy.

When inquired about the possibility of the Cobra Kai franchise extending past the end of Cobra Kai and the May 30 premiere of Karate Kid: Legends, Macchio expressed, “Perhaps. As long as the continuation remains sincere, authentic, and faithful to the roots of this character and these characters, I’ll always be receptive to discussions because it brings me joy to see the next generation enjoy the same experiences we have had.” In a world that isn’t always cheerful, it’s quite refreshing to share some of that happiness.

Jackie Chan Brings His Star Power to Karate Kid: Legends

Macchio confessed that he felt a bit apprehensive going toe-to-toe with Chan, who performed many of his own stunts in “Karate Kid: Legends”. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chan said, “I don’t want to be just known as an action star. I aspire to be an actor capable of fighting, much like Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, or Sylvester Stallone.” He aims to change the audience’s perception after a decade: “From ‘Jackie’s not the action star’, people now recognize that Jackie can act too.

He remarked, “Whenever possible, I prefer doing tasks myself. As a youngster, I could perform complex kicks like triple triples and double doubles. Nowadays, if I can manage just one kick, I’ll do one. I believe the spectators appreciate seeing Jackie perform genuine stunts.

Karate Kid: Legends premieres May 30, 2025.
