As an enthusiast who delved into Atlus via “Persona 4 Golden” on the PS Vita, I found myself intrigued to explore more of their games in the past. My adventure led me to the captivating world of “Etrian Odyssey,” a series that quickly became my favorite from Atlus. I also grew fond of “Shin Megami Tensei IV” and slowly worked my way through whatever titles were available on 3DS and PS Vita. Regrettably, I overlooked Atlus’ PS2 releases until I tried Nocturne and the Digital Devil Saga series through the PS2 classics on PS3. However, I completely skipped “Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army.” With the upcoming remaster (essentially a remake) on the horizon, I was excited to rectify that omission. After sampling a preview build of “Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army’s” Steam version on Steam Deck and ROG Ally, it is an intriguing release in numerous ways.
As I delve deeper into this PC port preview, I wasn’t allowed to take my own screenshots for this build, instead using assets supplied by Atlus. Over the past month leading up to release, I’ve had some quality time with Raidou Remastered on my Steam Deck OLED, Steam Deck LCD, and ROG Ally, giving me a glimpse into how the PC port is evolving.
Although I haven’t played the original game, Raidou Remastered feels like a unique experience compared to other Atlus games that I have played before, in a positive manner. After spending an hour or so playing it, I watched a playthrough of the PS2 version, and I must say the visual upgrade is truly impressive, but it still retains its identity as Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. For more information about the game itself, I suggest you read Cullen’s preview here. In this post, I will share my thoughts on the PC version of the game so far. Please note that since this is an early build, there may be changes when the final release comes out.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you need anything else.
Raidou Remastered PC controls
Before diving into the graphics and customization settings, I was curious about the user-friendly nature of Raidou Remastered regarding input options. Not only does it offer various remapping options for controllers, but it also supports keyboard and mouse control. With mouse and keyboard, you can click and drag to move your character as well. Furthermore, the game intelligently adjusts button prompts dynamically if you switch between controller and keyboard and mouse controls.
Raidou Remastered PC graphics options
Instead of offering as many features as some recent Sega Like a Dragon remakes, it’s refreshing that Atlus didn’t release another Nocturne HD version. In contrast, Raidou Remastered stands out not only for its superior PC port quality but also as a comprehensive edition. Unlike Nocturne HD, it’s not limited to 30fps; in fact, it can effortlessly run above 60fps on PC. The game doesn’t have an internal frame rate limiter, but when you activate v-sync, it matches your monitor’s refresh rate. When you disable v-sync, the game aims for a smooth 60fps performance.
The graphics settings appear quite basic. You can opt for a prioritized graphics or performance setting, yet these seem to only affect the rendering scale, shadows, and anti-aliasing. You’re able to modify the rendering scale (options include 60, 80, and 100) and toggle shadows and anti-aliasing on or off. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any additional options in the version I tested. It appears to offer downsampling support straight out of the box as well.
Raidou Remastered Steam Deck impressions
As a dedicated fan, I can’t wait to delve into the preview build of Raidou Remastered, even though the full game is still a month away. While I can’t make any definitive statements about performance or Steam Deck recommended settings just yet, I must say that my initial testing on both my Steam Deck OLED and LCD models has been incredibly promising. If current trends continue, Raidou Remastered might even qualify for the Steam Deck Verified label by launch – if it hasn’t already! Keyboard input functions flawlessly on Valve’s handheld device during my testing, which is a great sign of things to come.
In a visual sense, the game appears robust and performs admirably across different screen sizes compared to Nocturne, however, there are certain performance problems on Steam Deck that aren’t hardware-related, as the performance doesn’t fluctuate in these specific situations regardless of resolution. Regardless of any adjustments I made, the frame rate remained around 40-45fps in these instances. I anticipate these issues will be addressed prior to release, but they were the only problems I encountered during an otherwise enjoyable gaming experience. These difficulties primarily occurred in the initial game area, with performance improving significantly later on.
Raidou Remastered ROG Ally impressions
On the ROG Ally, I encountered no troubles with the game. Playing at a resolution of 1080p with the render scale set to 100% and both anti-aliasing and shadows enabled, it consistently ran above 100 frames per second. There were occasional pauses in certain locations, but these were not significant.
From my initial experience, Raidou Remastered has already left a strong impression on me due to its captivating story, music, and visuals. Admittedly, I had low expectations considering Nocturne HD’s minimal port, but I’m genuinely thrilled with the PC version of Raidou Remastered thus far. In nearly every aspect, it exceeds my expectations. I eagerly anticipate playing the complete Steam build and hopefully exploring the game on the Switch 2 as well.
