As a film enthusiast with a penchant for horror and science fiction, I can’t help but feel my heart racing with anticipation for the upcoming anthology “Deepest, Darkest.” With its genre-bending blend of horror, dark comedy, suspense, and sci-fi, this project promises to be a thrilling rollercoaster ride that I simply can’t resist.
The latest addition has been made to the distinguished roster of stars in the upcoming horror and sci-fi anthology titled “Deepest, Darkest.” This newcomer is no stranger to the genre.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Rahul Kohli, an esteemed actor who graced Mike Flanagan’s supernatural universe (“The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “The Fall of the House of Usher”) and played a pivotal role in the crime-solving series “iZombie,” has now become part of the stellar ensemble cast for “Deepest, Darkest.” This upcoming horror anthology is a brainchild of writer and director Marc Bernardin, along with the talented Tiffany Smith.
Kohli shares his excitement about ‘Deepest Darkest’, a captivating endeavor that blends genres he adores and brings together his favorite collaborators. With such an appealing opportunity, it was an obvious choice for him, as he shared with EbMaster early on.
Kohli has been added to the lineup that was earlier announced, which includes Smith (for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Rosario Dawson (“The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka”), Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Yetide Badaki (“American Gods”), Phil LaMarr (“Futurama” and “Samurai Jack”), as well as Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett from “Quantum Leap”.
To round out that stellar collection, the genre exhibition is overseen by Akela Cooper (“M3GAN,” “Malignant”) and David Dastmalchian (“Late Night With the Devil,” “The Suicide Squad”) as executive producers.
The series ‘Deepest, Darkest’ is jointly created by Bernardin, who has a background in ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ‘Castle Rock’, and Smith. It is produced by Rachel Walker, Carrie Finn, and Kyle Smithers.
Bernardin, who has previously won a WGA Award, is set to make his directorial debut having directed the short film “Splinter” last year.
The collection offers a unique combination of horror, dark humor, suspense, and science fiction, as suggested in the pitch: “Have you ever harbored a secret so immense, so dreadful, so unimaginably horrifying that you had no other option but to keep it concealed? A secret whose disclosure would fundamentally alter your reality? Imagine there was someone tasked with hearing those secrets – as she has the inability to recall them. What price would you be willing to pay for forgiveness?
Under the title ‘Deepest, Darkest’, a group of accomplished television writers are set to make their directorial debut, delving into narratives of horror, suspense, dark humor, and advanced science fiction. These stories revolve around the universal human urge to conceal truths. Notable contributors include LaToya Morgan (‘The Walking Dead’), Deric A Hughes and Benjamin Raab (‘The Flash’), Ubah Mohamed (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’), Lamont Magee (‘Black Lightning’, ‘Star Wars: The Young Jedi Adventures’), Sujata Day (‘Insecure’), and Kevin Avery (‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’). Among them, Avery and Day will both direct and feature in their respective episodes.
The movie is currently gathering funds through a Kickstarter drive, with $128,000 already contributed towards its target of $250,000. As Bernardin notes, “Kickstarter can be risky,” but he feels that there’s an audience who might appreciate a series of short films that aim to thrill, scare, and provoke while also championing voices that aren’t usually the main focus in such narratives.
With 713 backers so far, the campaign runs until Thursday, Sept. 26.
