The show R.J. Decker has been renewed for a second season, just 10 days after its first season ended.
The decision to renew R.J. Decker finishes a remarkably successful season for ABC. This is especially notable considering how different things are for their competitor.
R.J. Decker Renewed for Season 2
Out of all the shows on ABC, R.J. Decker was the most likely to be canceled. It wasn’t performing as well as the shows that aired before it on Tuesday nights. However, ABC is currently satisfied with the show’s ratings considering its production costs.
The show had a rocky start, with the first episode being filmed multiple times to establish its unique style. However, it improved throughout the first season, and a second season with a more developed concept could attract a larger audience.
Speaking with TV Insider, Doherty explained that the show’s self-contained cases are its core strength. He’s excited to return to the quirky, Florida-based stories inspired by Carl Hiaasen. He noted that these lighter, stranger cases are easier to create than those with intense personal stakes. As the show moves into a second season, the plan is to begin with a fun, unusual, and distinctly Floridian story, while also resolving the consequences of the events that affected RJ, Emi, and Victor at the end of season one.
What Is R.J. Decker About?
Created by Rob Doherty, R.J. Decker features Scott Speedman as the main character, a man trying to rebuild his life in South Florida. Once a newspaper photographer and former convict, he now works as a private investigator, taking on unusual and often strange cases. He’s aided by his ex-girlfriend, who is a journalist, her wife—a police detective—and a mysterious woman from his past who could either help him immensely or send him back to prison.
Scott Speedman plays the lead role of R.J. Decker. The supporting cast includes Jaina Lee Ortiz as Emilia “Emi” Ochoa, Bevin Bru as Detective Melody “Mel” Abreu, Kevin Rankin as Aloysius “Wish” Aiken, and Adelaide Clemens as Catherine Delacroix.
The series R.J. Decker is based on Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel Double Whammy and is produced by 20th Television. Michael Doherty wrote the show and oversees it as showrunner and executive producer. Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman, Hiaasen, Jason Tracey, and Paul McGuigan (who also directs) are all executive producers, and Scott Speedman is a producer.
R.J. Decker will be back on ABC for the 2026-2027 season. You can currently watch Season 1 of R.J. Decker on Hulu.
