As a long-time Potterhead who’s grown up with Harry and his magical world, this Quidditch Champions announcement has me flying high! The Triwizard Quidditch Cup is something I’ve always wanted to witness, and finally getting a chance to play it is beyond exciting.
Warner Bros. Games have disclosed that the game Quidditch Champions will feature the Triwizard Quidditch Cup, with unique pitches designed based on Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang schools.
In the career version of this game, players can work their way up to the Triwizard Quidditch Tournament, where they can select one of the three schools and compete against famous characters from each institution. Representing Hogwarts are Cedric Diggory, Ron Weasley, and none other than Harry Potter himself. Fleur Delacour will be seen representing Beauxbatons, while Viktor Krum leads the Durmstrang team.
In the film “Goblet of Fire,” the Triwizard Tournament played a significant role, as characters like Fleur, Viktor, Cedric, and Harry competed for the championship. However, this was the first time a tournament involving three schools took place (with unfortunate consequences for Cedric). Contrary to what may be assumed, the movie did not depict a Quidditch match between champions but rather showed Harry and his friends attending the Quidditch World Cup, an event separate from the Quidditch Champions.
At Unbroken Studios, the developers used their creativity to envision how each Quidditch team from different schools might appear. For instance, they designed exquisite brooms for the Beaubatons and a well-groomed pitch that aligns with the school’s refined status. On the other hand, the Durmstrang team plays on robust brooms in challenging circumstances, reflecting the school’s tougher atmosphere.
In contrast, the location for Beauxbatts is nestled within the majestic Pyrenees Mountains in southern France, whereas Durmstrang’s grounds lie at the extreme northern tip of Europe.
“In stark contrast, we positioned Durmstrang’s field during the aurora-lit nights instead of Beauxbatons’ daytime splendor. The area boasts architecture reminiscent of Vikings, with sparse lighting to maintain the school’s secrecy. The field is secluded from the main school for this same reason and features a unique student vessel docked nearby. Surrounded by water, the field’s surface is a frozen expanse of black stone, offering athletes an icy reminder of their errors each time they fall off their brooms.”
In the movies, you might recognize the magical Hogwarts field. It’s so iconic, no introduction is needed when talking about it, as even the studios didn’t feel a need to include one in their announcement.
In the past year, Quidditch Champions has become the second video game based on Harry Potter to be released, following the blockbuster hit Hogwarts Legacy from 2023. Remarkably, it surpassed even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in sales to become the top-selling game in the United States that year.
On September 3, the $30 game becomes available digitally for both consoles and PCs. For an entire month, PlayStation Plus members can grab it free of charge. The physical versions for Xbox and PlayStation will hit stores on November 8, and a Switch version will be released later in the year.
