Questlove to Direct Earth Wind & Fire Documentary

As a cinema devotee who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant tapestry of music and film, I can confidently say that the upcoming Earth, Wind & Fire documentary is a beacon of anticipation for me. Having grown up grooving to their timeless tunes like “Shining Star” and “September,” I’m thrilled to see the story of this iconic band unfold on the big screen.

Do you remember the 21st night of September?

Indeed, allow six-time Grammy victor and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson to serve as your guide through the definitive documentary about the legendary band, Earth, Wind & Fire.

Earth, Wind & Fire is recognized as one of the most successful pop bands in history, both critically and commercially. They’ve sold over 90 million records worldwide, had eleven albums achieve gold or platinum status consecutively, won six Grammy Awards, and created iconic songs such as “Shining Star,” “Let’s Groove,” “Reasons,” and the evergreen “September.” The upcoming feature documentary, hinted at by Questlove on social media for a 2025 release, will delve into the lasting impact, cultural significance, and extensive discography of this legendary band. It will utilize exclusive archival materials including visuals, recordings, and written documents, along with the cooperation of the estate of the late Maurice White and the band members themselves.

In this dynamic team that flows with an Afrocentric exuberance, I’ve gained insights about them, about us, but most profoundly, I’ve uncovered and reaffirmed my own identity,” Thompson expressed in a statement revealing the project. “I am thrilled to be involved in the journey of chronicling their uplifting yet raw narrative of Soul, Identity, and Struggle.

The Earth, Wind & Fire group members, including Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson, expressed their anticipation for an extensive exploration of their band. They’re thrilled that Questlove will be the one steering the documentary’s production.

The documentary is funded by Fifth Season (known for productions like “McCartney 3, 2, 1,” “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” “Superpower,” and “Kiss the Future”), who will also be responsible for its distribution along with WME.

Questlove, leader of The Roots, has recently ventured into filmmaking again following his first directorial effort with “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”, which garnered an Academy Award, BAFTA award, Film Independent Spirit award, Peabody award, and the Sundance grand jury prize. He has also executive produced documentaries such as “The League” by Academy Award nominee Sam Pollard and “Descendant” by Emmy nominee Margaret Brown. Currently, he is working on a documentary about Sly and the Family Stone. Questlove is managed by WME and Shawn Gee.

In this project, Questlove, Dave Sirulnick and Samantha Grogin from RadicalMedia, along with KB White from Broken Halo Entertainment (son of the late band leader Maurice White) and Arron Saxe from Kinfolk Management + Media will act as producers. The film is being made in collaboration with Sony Music Vision. Zarah Zohlman and Shawn Gee of Two One Five Entertainment, Jon Kamen of RadicalMedia, Cheo Hodari Coker and Amos Newman will serve as executive producers.

Mary Lisio, EVP of non-scripted development & production at Fifth Season, expressed great enthusiasm, stating, ‘This is an exceptional chance for viewers to delve unhindered into one of the most influential and culturally significant music groups ever,'” said Mary Lisio. “We are highly optimistic that this will offer a fascinating insight into the revolutionary group’s journey to global stardom.

Sirulnick, president of RadicalMedia, who has worked with Questlove four times, stated that Earth, Wind & Fire’s influence on global popular culture over many years is significant. He expressed gratitude but emphasized that this project wouldn’t be feasible without the trust and collaboration of KB White and Arron Saxe, whom they hold in high regard.
