At the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Classics segment this year, Quentin Tarantino, our honored guest, expressed his enthusiasm for George Sherman – a renowned U.S. director known for low-budget Westerns and various genre films. On Wednesday, he filled a screening with eager attendees, showcasing two of Sherman’s Universal Pictures movies.
Tarantino expressed his gratitude towards the Cannes Film Festival for organizing a double feature of George Sherman westerns and filling the venue to capacity, with many people even standing. He made this statement on the Salle Bunuel stage following an introduction by Thierry Frémaux. ‘This really warms my heart,’ he added.”

“Tarantino was pleased to thank the Cannes Film Festival for organizing a double feature of George Sherman westerns that had the audience packed, with people standing room only. He spoke on Salle Bunuel stage after being introduced by Thierry Frémaux, and expressed that it does his heart good.
The program consisted of two parts: “Red Canyon,” painted by Sherman in 1949, and “Comanche Territory,” which was created in 1950.
After the screening of “Red Canyon”, Tarantino went on to discuss the career trajectory of Sherman, noting that when he was initially brought on board by Universal, they hadn’t fully grasped his remarkable speed in filmmaking.
Tarantino stated, “They were unaware of just how swiftly he could execute his plays.” Being quick is nice, even wonderful – particularly for those in management positions – but what truly matters is the quality of the footage.
Later on, Tarantino himself provided an explanation for his query: “You can clearly see from the footage how exceptional it is. This individual works faster than any other director we have under contract, yet the quality remains superb, and he’s so skilled in storytelling that actors admire him immensely. Not even the legendary Shelley Winters ever caused him trouble.
Quentin Tarantino, director of “Pulp Fiction” and “Jackie Brown”, emphasized a valuable lesson for aspiring filmmakers from Sherman’s swiftness and efficiency. He explained, “Sherman didn’t have any more hours in the day than other directors, but it was what he accomplished within that time that made all the difference.” Tarantino went on to say, “I want to share this with you young filmmakers: You will only have a limited amount of time each day when making a movie. It’s crucial to make the most of it.
He went on to say: “Consider this: We all strive for what we desire most. We all aim for the best outcomes. However, the true value lies not just in achieving what we want, but in doing so within the boundaries set for us. It’s the manner in which you utilize that time, that will ultimately shape your identity.
On Tuesday evening during the commencement of the Cannes Film Festival, Quentin Tarantino made his appearance for the first time. He took everyone by surprise as he formally launched the event during the ceremony itself, exclaiming, “It’s an honor to announce that the 78th festival is now open!” Following this, he dramatically dropped the microphone.
Cannes Film Festival runs through May 24.
