‘Queer’ Trailer: Daniel Craig Seduces Drew Starkey in Luca Guadagnino’s Sexy and Surreal Gay Romance

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional narratives and a soft spot for period pieces, the upcoming release of “Queer” has me absolutely thrilled. Having delved deep into the works of William Burroughs and Luca Guadagnino’s directorial oeuvre, I can’t help but feel that this cinematic collaboration is a match made in heaven.

The trailer for the movie “Queer,” featuring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey from “Outer Banks,” has been unveiled by A24. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, who worked on “Challengers” and “Call Me By Your Name,” and written by Justin Kuritzkes, the film is scheduled to hit cinemas from November 27 onwards.

The story ‘Queer’ – derived from William Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel – unfolds in Mexico City during the 1940s. The protagonist, an American expatriate named William Lee (Craig), predominantly resides among fellow American college students and bar owners, leading a life of solitude. His world is disrupted when he encounters Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a former U.S. Navy serviceman with a drug habit who initially shows no interest in Lee’s advances. However, their relationship eventually deepens. The film also features Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, and Omar Apollo in supporting roles.

The movie titled “Queer” made its debut at the Venice International Film Festival, vying for the prestigious Golden Lion award. Afterward, it was showcased at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.

Guadagnino defines “Queer” as a deeply personal film that explores the universal pursuit of being seen and acknowledged by someone else, using the perspective of renowned author William Burroughs.

Film critic Owen Glieberman from EbMaster, in his Venice review, described “Queer” as both daring and trippy. He also heaped substantial praise on Gary Oldman as Craig, stating that instead of trying to imitate the older William Burroughs who became a punk icon in the ’80s with his dry voice and hostile stare, Craig offers a hint of that menacing Burroughs genetic makeup. However, what makes Craig’s performance remarkable, according to Glieberman, is its audacity, humor, and liveliness. He portrays a younger Burroughs (around 40 years old at the time), before he had fully embraced the cultivated insanity that would later inspire his groundbreaking novel, “Naked Lunch.
