Quake 5 Was In Development But Canceled A Decade Ago

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the Quake series. While there has been Quake Champions which focuses on multiplayer, I can’t help but miss the single-player aspects of earlier games. Here’s something intriguing: At one point, a new game called Quake 5 (the sixth installment) was being developed…but unfortunately, it was ultimately canceled.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve learned from Dr. Hingis’ insights (retweeted by AestheticGamer, also known as Dusk Golem) that the game we’re all excited about has been under development at ID Software for quite some time. Interestingly, it seems to have been shifted on and off the development schedule during both the RAGE and original DOOM 4 production phases.

It’s worth noting that Quake 5 was scrapped during the production of DOOM 2016, roughly a decade past. This information comes from Dr. Hingis on X, who also provided some images as proof!

During the process of creating Doom 4 (version 1.0), RAGE, and initially even Doom 2016, Quake 5 was intermittently under development at Id Software. Recently, I discovered a site belonging to a current employee of Id who posted some of their work related to this project on their portfolio.

It seems that the screenshots were posted by someone currently employed at ID Software, and they shared some of their work. However, at the moment, we haven’t been able to locate the exact website, so consider this details with a bit of skepticism.

It’s uncertain whether we’ll eventually get another Quake game, but given that Microsoft and Bethesda own the intellectual property, it seems unlikely they’d keep it hidden forever. Therefore, I personally think a new Quake game is on the horizon. In the meantime, keep those strogg spirits high!
