Scientists studying how pythons eat incredibly large meals have found a special substance in their blood that might lead to new ways to help people lose weight.
This important discovery could lead to a new wave of weight-loss therapies with fewer side effects.
As a gamer, I’m always amazed by how pythons operate! They can basically swallow something huge and then chill for months, or even years, without needing to eat again. It’s like they’ve got built-in energy-saving mode! The crazy part is, they stay healthy while doing it – their hearts keep working perfectly, and they don’t lose muscle. It’s seriously impressive biological optimization, almost like a perfectly balanced character build!
Nature-inspired metabolic treatments
Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder, Stanford University, and Baylor University studied blood samples taken from pythons right after they ate to learn more about their unique ability to process food.
Researchers discovered that a substance called para-tyramine-O-sulfate (pTOS) increased dramatically – by a thousand times – in the snakes’ blood after they ate.
Further studies revealed that giving mice large amounts of this substance, created by bacteria in the gut, led to weight loss. It appears to work by directly affecting the part of the brain that controls hunger.
Crucially, the treatment did not cause gastrointestinal issues or a drop in overall energy levels.
The findings offer a highly promising alternative to current GLP-1 weight loss drugs.
Current medications can have serious side effects, such as nausea, causing many patients to stop taking them within a year.
Researchers are exploring a naturally produced chemical in the body to create appetite suppressants with fewer side effects.
The scientists have launched a company called Arkana Therapeutics to develop and sell lab-created versions of the chemicals found in the pythons.
I’ve been following the research on python metabolism, and it’s really exciting! The scientists working on it aren’t just looking at how pythons stay healthy while losing weight; they think understanding this could eventually help us with things like sarcopenia – that muscle loss that happens as we get older. It’s amazing because right now, there aren’t any approved treatments for sarcopenia, so this research could be a real game-changer!
