The animated film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” isn’t merely causing an existential dilemma for viewers, but it’s sparking creative ideas for director Ryan Coogler as he works on his next project. Imagine if we could all witness a cat pondering its existence through Coogler’s perspective. During an interview on the Get Rec’d podcast with host Juju Green, Coogler revealed that the latest escapade of Puss in Boots has significantly influenced his upcoming movie, Sinners. When discussing the villain and his characteristics, Coogler posed these questions to Green: “Consider the villain. Consider his distinctive features. Consider his demeanor.” The main antagonist of Puss in Boots, Wolf, had piercing red eyes; the villain Remmick (played by Jack O’Connell) in Sinners also has piercing red eyes. Wolf was presumed to bite others; since Remmick is a vampire, that trait aligns naturally with his character.
Ryan Coogler drew inspiration for the film beyond Dreamworks’ iconic cat character. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he expressed his desire for the movie to embody a song, using Metallica’s “One” as his creative muse. He described it as beginning intensely, then becoming melodious, leading somewhere utterly wild, but ultimately bringing you to where you were always meant to go.
