As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has seen countless survival stories unfold on screen, I must say that “A Survivor’s Tale” stands out as a unique and powerful addition to the genre. Having spent my fair share of time braving the wilderness myself, I can appreciate the sheer determination and resilience required to endure such adversity.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve joined forces with Pulsar Content on “A Survivor’s Tale,” a production by KG Prods., the esteemed banner of Costa Gavras and Michèle Ray-Gavras. Salomé Dewaels, who shone in Xavier Giannoli’s Venice competition film “Lost Illusions,” will headline this movie.
Under the guidance of Belgian filmmaker Micha Wald, the movie titled “A Survivor’s Tale” is inspired by actual events involving Marguerite de la Rocque, a 16th-century noblewoman from Canada. In a cruel twist of fate, she was left in the wilderness due to her pregnancy, which resulted from a brutal attack. Accompanied by her rapist and maid, she was exiled to an uninhabited island close to Newfoundland.
For two harrowing years, Marguerite endures on the “Island of the Maiden,” battling starvation and unyielding cold. Amidst her struggle to sustain both herself and her developing baby, Marguerite’s experience undergoes a significant metamorphosis and liberation. Known as “L’île de la Demoiselle” in its original form, the film boasts the talents of the rising French actor Louis Peres, who was recently seen in “For Night Will Come.”
Alexandre Gavras, from KG Productions, is collaborating with Stenola Productions to create a new movie. They have worked together before on Joachim Lafosse’s films “The Restless” and “A Silence”. Pulsar will initiate international sales for this project at the Toronto event.
“KG Prods. expressed their hope that the genuine tale of Marguerite de la Roque’s survival and growth on this desolate island would inspire determination in women of every age, as it showcases the incredible strength of human will.”
I had the thrill of making my cinematic debut with “In the Arms of My Enemy,” a film that graced the screens at Cannes’ Critics Week, marking a significant milestone in my career as an aspiring filmmaker.
As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to express my enthusiasm for ‘A Survivor’s Tale’. This is an empowering and grandiose period piece that showcases resilient characters destined to captivate global audiences. Delving into the heart of its narrative, it presents a powerful true tale that mirrors our contemporary times with striking resonance.
Stenola pointed out that although survivor movies are frequently portrayed through male characters, Micha Wald takes advantage of this narrative to profoundly touch us with Marguerite’s remarkable journey.
Filming for this project kicks off in October, specifically in the region of Brittany. It’s expected that production will wrap up around mid-2025. “The Jokers Films” is slated to premiere in France upon its completion.
