As a dedicated Nintendo fan, I’m excitedly anticipating the digital evolution of the Switch 2. Although the console will continue to accommodate traditional cartridges, these may function primarily as authentication devices for downloading games onto the system. One forward-thinking company is making a promise not to supply Game-Key Cards with their Switch 2 cartridges, maintaining their commitment to delivering physical games to gamers like me.
At PAX East 2025, Limited Run Games shared its approach regarding Switch 2 game cartridges with Boss Rush. This company, known for distributing both classic and contemporary digital games physically on platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch consoles, stated that the majority of their games would be complete physical releases, with the full game included on the cartridge. However, there will be exceptions to this rule, specifically for games released in collaboration and those not under the company’s numbered release umbrella. The decision to make these exceptions will be left up to the developer or publisher.
Game-Key Cards are significantly more affordable in terms of production costs, and Nintendo has assured users that these cards won’t be restricted to your future Switch 2 device or linked to your account if you decide to resell them later on. The introduction of Game-Key cards has garnered some controversy because it seems players might need to enhance the internal storage capacity of their Switch 2, as the console provides 256GB of storage but a portion will be allocated for system files, requiring an expensive MicroSD Express card for additional storage.
Note that certain Switch 2 video games, specifically those with Game-Key Cards, come with a warning label on the cover. Some of these Switch 2 games provide the entire game on the cartridge itself. This applies not only to popular first-party games like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong: Bananza, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild but also to a selection of third-party games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, which will also be offered as full game releases.
