As a seasoned gamer with decades of virtual battles under my belt, I must say that the new Play for Green initiative by PUBG Mobile is not just a breath of fresh air but a much-needed wake-up call. The collaboration between Lightspeed Studios, Krafton, and University College London professor Mark Maslin to create a climate-ravaged Erangel map is a powerful reminder of the reality we might face if we continue down our current path.
In a fresh approach towards combating global warming, PUBG Mobile is launching a new project named “Play for Green.” This innovative feature allows gamers to engage in combat on an altered rendition of their popular Erangel map, which has been significantly impacted by the consequences of climate change.
In partnership with PUBG Mobile creators Lightspeed Studios and Krafton, along with Professor Mark Maslin from University College London (who has authored several books on the threats of climate change), a new map for PUBG Mobile was designed. Using Maslin’s research on future environmental impacts due to unchecked climate change, they envisioned how Erangel would appear 100 years from now. This vision resulted in a post-apocalyptic landscape, characterized by sandstorms, drought, and scarcity of vegetation.

For self-explorers, there are two distinct modes showcasing the storm-torn Ruins of Erangel. Firstly, “Ruins of Erangel: Sandstorm” offers a battle royale experience similar to what PUBG enthusiasts know, where players must endure not just sandstorms but also fellow combatants. Secondly, “Ruins of Erangel: Exploration” presents a narrative journey through the map, guiding players on a path that highlights the devastating impact of climate change on its surroundings.
During the period from September 11th to 24th, there’s an exciting “Run for Green” event happening within the game. This event encourages players to run in-game distances, which will collectively contribute towards achieving milestones that support projects aimed at preserving natural environments in Brazil, Indonesia, and Pakistan. As you progress through this campaign, you’ll unlock unique customization items and a special garden in the Home mode of the game, where you can decorate it with endangered trees and plants.
In the game’s imaginative realm, World of Wonder, rare California Redwood and Giant Baobab trees are being incorporated. Creative gamers who design altered versions of the map Ruins of Erangel, impacted by climate change, using these new elements will have their creations evaluated by the PUBG Mobile team. If they impress, these players stand a chance to claim a piece of the $12,500 prize pool. Moreover, if collectively players play the official new Play for Green map or user-created maps 10 million times, the PUBG Mobile team will boost their donations towards environmental initiatives selected as part of the campaign.
The event is linked to the Playing for the Planet campaign, a collaboration among video game companies committed to lessening the environmental footprint of the gaming industry. This endeavor is backed by the United Nations Environment Programme. Notably, both Xbox and Sony are part of this initiative, with Xbox experimenting in producing carbon-neutral consoles. A recent worldwide survey of PUBG: Mobile players revealed that a staggering 88% expressed worry over climate change, and an even greater number admitted to personally witnessing the impacts of climate change within their home countries.
In a press statement, Vincent Wang, leader of PUBG Mobile publication at Tencent Games, expressed that the potential of video games could prove instrumental in overcoming some of the most significant issues facing us today.
Through endeavors such as the Ruins of Erangel maps and the Run for Green event, Wang stated that we are not only producing captivating content for our gamers; rather, we are sparking a worldwide movement encouraging people to engage in genuine life actions.
The Green Play campaign is simply the most recent addition to the array of happenings in PUBG Mobile. Previously, a time-bound event introduced dinosaurs into the battle royale, while the mobile game has also partnered with various other franchises, such as Dragon Ball Super and Spy x Family.
