PSP turned into working GPS as Nintendo dared to do same with Switch 2

One enthusiastic supporter has essentially resurrected the PSP, transforming it into a functional GPS device! Remarkably, after almost two decades, this portable gadget is now displaying real-time maps, step-by-step navigation, and precise location tracking, all thanks to a clever modification.

The whole thing began when 1800ghostman posted a viral message showcasing a PlayStation Portable (PSP) running a full Global Positioning System (GPS) software. He added a playful remark, “I wonder if the Nintendo Switch can do this.” This post quickly circulated, eventually ending up on Reddit and Instagram, where initial disbelief evolved into nostalgic appreciation.

One Instagram user expressed disbelief, commenting, “I’m still in shock that the PSP had a GPS,” as some younger players found it hard to comprehend that such a feature existed on the device initially.

PSP used as a GPS and fans challenge Switch to do the same

In 2006, Sony unveiled the PSP-290 GPS receiver. This device, along with mods such as MapThis or Go Explore, allowed enthusiasts to transform the gaming console into a functional navigation system. The upgrade featured voice instructions, downloadable maps, and satellite lock capabilities.

Of course, since the launch of the Switch 2, there’s been a wave of Nintendo enthusiasts urging the company to step up their game, playfully teasing on Reddit about wanting to see the Switch 2 accomplish certain tasks. Meanwhile, some critics humorously pointed out that while the PSP pioneered many features, the Switch 2 in 2025 is still lacking GPS capabilities, alluding to the console’s seemingly outdated hardware.

Indeed, you won’t find GPS capabilities built into the Switch 2 at all. Consequently, setting up a system like the one you described would require some creative modifications or mobile hotspot usage, along with numerous adjustments that could potentially damage your Switch. Given these challenges, it’s highly improbable that games such as Mario or the Switch in general will ever guide us to our destination.

Even though it’s been almost 20 years since its launch, you can still use your PSP for GPS navigation, but keep in mind that it may not work properly on roads constructed after 2006.
