As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast with countless hours invested in their console’s vast library, I must admit that the recent intrusion of ads on the PS5 dashboard has left me feeling somewhat disheartened. It feels like an unwelcome guest crashing a party you’ve been eagerly anticipating for months.
On the PlayStation 5, Sony is altering the method in which ads appear within games by seamlessly integrating them into the dashboard’s user interface. Previously showcasing game artwork, the dashboard now displays advertisements, and it appears that there’s no option to turn off these ads aside from disconnecting the PS5 from the internet.
The ads seem to correlate with the main news streams related to the specific games being discussed. To illustrate, if we were discussing the latest Spider-Man game at TopMob headquarters, an ad for a roundtable video featuring the creators of Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse might appear. You can find additional instances in the gallery below.
In some instances, such as the ad linked with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, you might find that they’re no longer current. Specifically, it seems to be a promotional offer tied to May the 4th, which occurred in the previous May.
It’s not surprising that PS5 gamers are expressing disappointment following these changes, as the initial feedback on social media has predominantly been quite critical.
It seems quite surprising that, after spending $600 on a console, an additional $80 for a single game, and $30 per month for online access, you’re expected to endure constant advertisements? For how much longer will Sony continue this pattern of charging customers?

Initially, I found myself quite bewildered upon hovering over Horizon Zero Dawn, only to discover a complete advertisement for the Lego game. For a moment, I thought perhaps I had received an early copy by mistake, chuckling at my own amusement.

It appears that an unexpected update has introduced this information, which seems quite peculiar. The irony is, developers like Suicide Squad and possibly many others often share PS5 updates soon after launch. So instead of the expected new character artwork for the season, we’re faced with a news article that’s over 7 months old?
