PS5 Pro Revealed For $700, Launches In November

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit, the announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro has me feeling like a kid on Christmas morning! The sheer power and potential this new console offers is nothing short of mind-blowing.

After much anticipation, rumors, and disclosures, Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro. This announcement was made by PlayStation’s system architect Mark Cerny during Sony’s “PlayStation 5 Technical Overview.” The PS5 Pro is expected to nearly double the power of the standard PS5. Priced at $700 USD, it lacks a disc drive and the vertical stand must be purchased separately. Pre-orders will start on September 26.

This system comes equipped with a 2TB Solid State Drive, a DualSense wireless gamepad, along with a copy of Astro’s Playroom. It will be available for purchase starting from November 7, both at PlayStation Direct and numerous retailers worldwide.

The system boasts AI-enhanced resolution boosting and enhanced hardware for smoother rendering and advanced ray tracing. According to Cerny, this console is Sony’s “most powerful” ever built. While maintaining a similar design to the current PS5 model, it features a striking side cutout resembling racing stripes.

Here are the key technical details for the PS5 Pro, as written by PlayStation:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

While the PS5 Pro does not come with a disc drive, it is compatible with the $80 disc drive add-on.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to share that some of the games leveraging the incredible features of the PS5 Pro include titles like Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and a remastered version of The Last of Us Part II. You’ll be able to spot these PS5 Pro Enhanced games by the label in their titles.

The PS5 Pro comes equipped with the PS5 Pro Game Boost feature, which amplifies suitable PS4 games specifically for the PS5 Pro, and Sony has announced that over 8,500 games can be played on this enhanced console.

“Sony clarified that this new feature could boost or maintain the performance of games on both PS4 and PS5 consoles. Additionally, for compatible PS4 games, there’s an option to enhance image quality, which can increase resolution. The launch version of PS5 Pro will incorporate the latest Wi-Fi technology, Wi-Fi 7, in regions where it’s available. Furthermore, it supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and 8K gaming.

The PS5 Pro can work with previously released PlayStation accessories such as the PS VR 2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Pulse Elite, Pulse Explore, and Access controller.

Sony acknowledges that our PS5 adventure wouldn’t be here without the countless gamers who have stood by us over the years and expressed their passion for video games. Regardless of whether players opt for the standard PS5 or an advanced PS5 Pro, we strive to deliver a top-notch gaming experience tailored to each player’s preferences.

In line with Sony’s past practices, it appears that a “Pro” version of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) might be released, similar to how the PS4 Pro was launched in November 2016. The initial price difference between the two PS4 models was $100, with the PS4 priced at $300 and the PS4 Pro at $400. However, if a PS5 Pro becomes available, it could cost $700, which is $200 more than the standard PS5, priced at $500.

Before the official unveiling, I stumbled upon a photo shared by Hideo Kojima’s assistant, showcasing him engrossed in Death Stranding 2 with an intriguing gadget concealed beneath his cloak. Some speculated that this might just be a developer’s edition of the rumored PS5 Pro.

Following the triumphant release of the highly-praised Astro Bot, which boosted Sony’s image, the unveiling of the PS5 Pro isn’t far behind, coming shortly after; this revelation comes on the heels of a period when Sony was still recovering from the sudden closure of Concord.
