At last, after quite some wait, PlayStation 5 users now have the convenience of using Apple Pay directly for game purchases.
9to5Mac initially reported that the latest PS5 update now integrates iOS 18, enabling direct purchases using Apple Pay. Prior to this update, PS5 users could utilize Apple Pay through the PlayStation App or browser, but native support for this widely-used payment method has only just been added to the console after more than four years.
Instead of needing additional actions, customers can now easily opt for Apple Pay directly at the checkout on their PlayStation 5 consoles. A QR code will appear for them to scan with their iPhone or iPad, thereby finalizing the transaction swiftly.
Apple Pay, being the globally recognized leader in digital wallets, holding over 90% market share in the United States, naturally leads to the idea that Sony and Apple might collaborate to provide users with this popular service. Furthermore, considering that Apple Cards offer a 2% cashback on purchases, it seems likely that Apple Pay will quickly become a preferred payment option for the PlayStation 5’s storefront.
While not all areas offer Apple Pay as an option, you can find a comprehensive list of countries where Sony supports this feature on their official website.
On PS5, Apple Pay now stands alongside PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App as additional payment options. Support for these services is anticipated to be extended to PS4 at a future time.
