Sony has announced that PlayStation Portal owners can now stream games directly from the cloud. Following a beta test, the updated Cloud Streaming feature lets PlayStation Plus Premium members play a much larger library of games on their Portal device without needing a PS5 console.
Okay, so as of today, you can cloud stream a TON of games on the PS Portal – like, over 2,800! I’m super excited because it includes some of Sony’s biggest hits, like Ghost of Yotei and Astro Bot. Plus, a bunch of third-party games are supported, including Borderlands 4 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Even better, if you’re a PS Plus member, you can stream games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog too. Sony also revamped the home screen with three tabs – Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search – which makes it way easier to find what you want to play.
To use Remote Play on the PS Portal, you need to connect it to your PS5 console. This lets you stream games that are already installed on your PS5 directly to the handheld device. You don’t need a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription for Remote Play, but you do for Cloud Streaming. The search function helps you find games that are available to stream via the Cloud Streaming service.
Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are getting some upgrades, including 3D audio support with compatible devices like the Pulse Explore earbuds. You’ll also be able to lock the screen with a passcode, and quickly see how good your internet connection is with a new network status screen on your PS Portal.
Cloud Streaming is getting some cool new features! Players will have improved accessibility options, the ability to buy items within games during a stream, and can receive game invites directly from friends who are already playing.
In 2023, Sony released the PS Portal, a handheld device that, while not for everyone, was praised for its solid build quality. It used PlayStation Link technology to deliver smooth, high-quality streaming with minimal lag and excellent audio. Looking ahead, Sony is reportedly working on the PS6 and recently shared a video hinting at exciting new technology developed in collaboration with AMD, potentially offering significant advancements.
