Amazon MGM Studios and Ryan Gosling have reason to be thrilled with the success of their new movie. Since its release in theaters on March 20th, the film has quickly achieved a significant accomplishment.
After just two weekends in theaters, Project Hail Mary has earned over $300 million worldwide. The sci-fi film has taken in a total of $300.8 million globally, with $164.3 million of that coming from domestic (U.S.) audiences. Importantly, ticket sales only decreased by a small amount – just 32% – from the first weekend to the second.
Project Hail Mary Is Amazon’s Biggest Movie Yet
With this achievement, Project Hail Mary became the year’s biggest blockbuster and the only Hollywood film to earn $300 million so far. Currently, the top-grossing movie globally is Pegasus 3, a Chinese sports film that has made $609 million. This situation is similar to 2025, when that film dominated the box office all year and ultimately grossed $2.26 billion.
With its recent success, Project Hail Mary has now earned more than both Pixar’s Hoppers and Wuthering Heights, Margot Robbie’s previous film, which made $236.1 million. It’s also become the highest-grossing movie for Amazon MGM Studios since the merger, exceeding the $276 million earned by Creed III last year.
While not quite as successful as the top movie, Hoppers is doing very well, earning $297.6 million worldwide, including a recent $37 million. With a production budget of $150 million, the Disney/Pixar animated film is close to earning back its costs.
As a huge movie fan, I’m thrilled to see Project Hail Mary doing so well! It’s predicted to bring in over $580 million worldwide, which is amazing, especially because it’s a completely original sci-fi film. It’s based on a novel, but it’s not part of any existing franchise – no sequels, reboots, or spin-offs here, just a fresh story!
Will Project Hail Mary Continue?
The movie Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name, and it tells a complete, standalone story. Weir hasn’t officially written any sequels to his books, though he has considered writing a follow-up to Hail Mary. The film’s ending deviates a bit from the book, and it opens up possibilities for a sequel.
Amazon MGM Studios is apparently beginning work on a new project. Although nothing is official yet, sources suggest a follow-up film is a possibility.
The film adaptation of Project Hail Mary is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who also directed Spider-Verse. Ryan Gosling stars in and produced the movie, alongside producer Amy Pascal.
In Project Hail Mary, the story centers around Dr. Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with amnesia. As his memories return, he realizes he’s a former scientist and teacher tasked with finding out why the sun is fading.
During the search, he on the space trip, and with an alien he names Rocky.
Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters.
