As a huge fan of The Expanse, I was thrilled to hear about the team’s next project, The Captive’s War! And honestly, the more I learn about it, the more excited I get. It’s fantastic that the people who made The Expanse so great are reuniting – that means the authors of the books, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham (writing as James S.A. Corey), are working with the showrunner, Naren Shankar, and director Breck Eisner again. It really feels like they’re setting up something special.
Instead of a story set on Earth, The Captive’s War follows a group of humans originally from another planet who are captured by the brutal Carryx Empire. With the right investment from Prime Video – similar to what they gave The Expanse – this show could be truly amazing.
While the alien species are fictional, the story relies on established scientific principles, along with insights into society and human behavior. The danger posed by the Carryx feels very real and overwhelming. And as the show’s release approaches, it’s becoming even more captivating.
I was so excited to see Ty Franck and Daniel Abrahams doing a Reddit AMA on April 14th, especially because they also launched their latest book, The Faith of Beasts! They shared some really interesting updates on both the book series and the TV show they’re working on, and honestly, it just makes me even more hyped for whatever they come up with next. It’s totally deserved, too – these are the creators of The Expanse, after all!
The Faith Of Beasts By James S.A. Corey Is Finally Out
Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham originally envisioned The Captive’s War as a series of three novels and two shorter stories. So far, readers have been able to read The Mercy of Gods, the first novel, and Livesuit, the first of those shorter stories. Now, the second book, The Faith of Beasts, is available, picking up the story right after the events of The Mercy of Gods. You can even read the first chapter for free, but be careful – it contains spoilers for the first book!
The authors also shared updates on future books. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session on April 14th, James S.A. Corey announced that the second short story is planned for release this year. They also mentioned that they’ve completed the outline for the third book and are now working on developing the story further.
Fans of the show will be happy to hear about the recent release and updates. However, the creators explained in a recent Q&A that they’re still in the very early stages of development and don’t have many details to share just yet.
As a huge fan, it just makes sense to me that the creators need to have a clear idea of the whole story – beginning, middle, and end – before they can really keep building on it. Otherwise, it’d be a total mess! I know Franck, Abraham, Shankar, and Eisner will probably face challenges, but with the release of The Faith of Beasts, it feels like they at least have a solid direction now.
The New Subplots Introduced In The Faith Of Beasts Will Make It Perfect For TV
Franck and Abraham don’t plan their novels around potential TV shows, but their writing naturally lends itself well to adaptation. The Faith of Beasts continues the thoughtful, unhurried style of The Mercy of Gods. It also introduces compelling new storylines that would translate perfectly to the screen.
Everything that happens in The Faith of Beasts, even the side stories, feels connected to the main plot. This makes those subplots meaningful and helps build the world and characters, rather than just adding length. Because of this, the show can briefly focus on other things without feeling like it’s wasting time.
The Faith Of Beasts Expands The Alien Races In Exciting New Ways
What sets The Expanse and The Captive’s War apart is their focus: The Expanse centers on humanity, while The Captive’s War revolves around alien civilizations. The first book introduced the Carryx Empire and their habit of abducting species and destroying planets, and now the sequel expands on that world and its story.
The Faith of Beasts adds to the existing story by introducing new creatures and expanding on the history of the Carryx. It also provides more details about alien species previously mentioned, creating a diverse and detailed world. If the upcoming TV show, The Captive’s War, can portray these creatures in a compelling and believable way, it has the potential to be excellent.
