Prime Video has a lot of great shows, including a fantastic sci-fi series that’s actually a reimagining of what many consider to be the best episode of Black Mirror. The platform is already home to critically acclaimed shows like The Expanse, and continues to add high-quality science fiction to its lineup.

Prime Video has a lot of fantastic TV shows that don’t get enough attention – they’re real hidden treasures. One of these is a sci-fi comedy-drama that finished airing in 2025. While it has a unique premise, it strongly resembles a standout episode of Black Mirror.

Prime Video’s Upload Has The Same Concept As Black Mirror’s San Junipero

In 2020, Prime Video debuted the sci-fi romantic comedy Upload, created by Greg Daniels. The show imagines a future where people can upload their consciousness into a digital afterlife, continuing to live as digital versions of themselves. However, the quality of these digital afterlives varies.

I’m really hooked on this show called Upload! The premise is so cool – basically, in the near future, if you have the money, you can have a ‘digital afterlife.’ Lots of companies offer these services, from fast food places to grocery stores, and the most high-end, super luxurious one is called Horizen’s Lakeview. The story follows Nathan Brown, played by Robbie Amell, who dies unexpectedly in a car crash. Luckily (or unluckily!), his girlfriend Ingrid, played by Allegra Edwards, is rich and impulsively uploads his consciousness to Lakeview. It’s a wild ride!

After arriving at Lakeview, Nathan forms a close connection with Nora, a customer service representative he affectionately calls his “angel.” She helps him discover that his death wasn’t accidental. As Nathan and Nora fall in love, things become more complicated – both for their investigation and for Nathan’s already strained relationship with Ingrid, because he can’t afford to stay at Lakeview long-term.

The show Upload presents a unique and thought-provoking idea, but the concept of a digital afterlife, similar to what’s shown in Black Mirror‘s “San Junipero,” has been explored before. That Black Mirror episode focuses on Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who connect at a virtual beach resort—a simulated reality where people can continue to live after death or visit as elderly individuals.

Yorkie and Kelly face very different circumstances: one desires to live forever in the digital world of San Junipero, while the other has made different arrangements for her passing. Both Upload and “San Junipero” explore the idea of life after death in a digital format, but they present this concept in unique ways.

Upload Made San Junipero’s Concept More Complex (& Heartbreaking)

I always expected Upload to be a bigger story than “San Junipero.” “San Junipero” was perfect as a standalone episode, and it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever get more of that world, which is a shame. But Upload really expanded things – it wasn’t just about Nathan and Nora’s romance; the show built so much more around that core relationship, adding all these fascinating layers and characters that really drew me in.

The show grapples with several mysteries: the murder of Nathan, the questionable motives behind the Freeyond upload service, a conspiracy within Lakeview, and disturbing rumors of companies collecting bodies to facilitate downloads. Unlike the generally optimistic “San Junipero” episode of Black Mirror, Upload concludes with a more intricate ending, consistent with the show’s overall complex tone.

While both Upload and Black Mirror‘s “San Junipero” share striking similarities, they are both compelling and emotionally resonant stories that deserve to be watched and rewatched.
