This new 16-episode action series on Prime Video feels like a great mix of the best parts of both Invincible and The Umbrella Academy. While Marvel and DC have long dominated the superhero landscape on TV and in movies, shows like Invincible and The Umbrella Academy have demonstrated that viewers are also eager for unique and different superhero stories.
Classic superhero stories about good versus evil will probably always be popular, but viewers are increasingly drawn to stories that offer a fresh take on the genre. This change in preference has helped comic book adaptations like Invincible and The Umbrella Academy find success on television.
I’ve been completely hooked by the superhero shows popping up lately! Besides loving The Umbrella Academy and Invincible, I was blown away by The Boys and its spin-off, Gen V. Honestly, Gen V felt like the best parts of The Umbrella Academy and Invincible all mixed together – it was fantastic!
This show, connected to the world of The Boys, shares its critique of corporate-controlled superheroes. But its emphasis on the challenges faced by young heroes with powers feels similar to themes explored in shows like Invincible and The Umbrella Academy, which also deal with superpowered individuals and the trauma they experience.
Similar to the main character in Invincible, the young superheroes in Gen V frequently discover that their childhood idols aren’t the heroes they thought – they’re actually monstrous people. Both shows powerfully portray this by using graphic violence and gore to illustrate how immense power can corrupt individuals in a vulnerable world.
Similar to the characters in The Umbrella Academy, the young superheroes in Gen V discover a sense of family and connection with others who share their unique challenges. Being around people who truly understand what it’s like to have superpowers helps them cope with difficult childhood experiences and develop their own sense of right and wrong in a world that often lacks it.
Although Gen V shares some similarities with shows like Invincible and The Umbrella Academy, it still carves out its own unique place in the superhero world. It particularly excels at portraying the harsh realities of the superhero industry – how relentless branding and public relations can negatively impact young heroes feels very relevant and impactful. Sadly, despite being a strong series, Gen V has been canceled after only two seasons.
Gen V Season 3 Not Happening Is A Major Disappointment After 2 Great Seasons
Spin-offs often feel like unnecessary additions to established franchises, particularly with superheroes. But Gen V was a surprising exception, actually surpassing its original show, The Boys, in several ways. While The Boys seemed to lose momentum in its fourth season, Gen V offered two fantastic seasons with standalone stories that cleverly connected to the larger franchise narrative.
While Gen V didn’t attract as many viewers as The Boys, the show cleverly used the characters’ superpowers to represent the challenges and emotional difficulties of growing up. Over its two seasons, viewers really connected with the well-developed young characters. Unfortunately, despite its success, Gen V was canceled.
Considering Gen V has always been connected to The Boys, it’s not entirely unexpected that it might be cancelled, especially since The Boys is also ending after its fifth season. However, the cancellation feels problematic because characters from Gen V aren’t really featured in the final season of The Boys.
I was so excited when I heard about the Gen V spin-off – it really seemed like they were building towards making its characters major players in The Boys’ fifth season. I even thought Marie, the main character, could become Homelander’s biggest threat in the final season! But honestly, after watching all six episodes of season five, I’m shocked that none of the Gen V characters have even made an appearance. It’s a real letdown!
If these characters appear in the final two episodes, their appearances will probably be brief cameos that don’t fully explore the storylines built up over the past two seasons. It’s a shame Gen V didn’t receive the same level of support as shows like The Boys, Invincible, and The Umbrella Academy. Despite only having two seasons, Gen V on Prime Video is still one of the best new superhero shows available.
