Prime Video Original Series ‘The House of the Sprits’ Starts Shooting Across Chile (EXCLUSIVE)

As a passionate fan of literature and storytelling, I am thrilled to see Amazon Studios bringing Isabel Allende’s beloved novel “The House of the Spirits” to life as a series. With over 70 million copies sold worldwide and a successful film adaptation in 1993, it’s an honor for me to witness this project that has touched so many lives.

I’m excited to share that I’m currently in Chile where principal photography is being carried out for “The House of the Spirits,” an engaging 8-part series coming soon on Prime Video. This project is particularly special as it’s based on Isabel Allende’s groundbreaking novel of the same name. Not only does Allende grace us with her involvement, but so does the talented Eva Longoria, who takes on executive producer duties along with her.

FilmNation Entertainment, the lead producer of the project, had been overseeing its development. They then recruited the Chilean filmmaking duo Francisca Alegria and Fernanda Urrejola, known for “The Cow Who Sang a Song into the Future,” to write and co-showrun the series. Andres Wood, an accomplished local director/producer with credits like “Machuca” and series “News of a Kidnapping” and “Los 80,” was also brought on board to co-showrun. Production services for the project are being provided by Fabula, the production company founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain.

With over 70 million copies sold, “The House of the Spirits” is considered one of the most prominent novels of the 20th century. It was brought to the big screen in 1993 by Bille August with Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Antonio Banderas and Wynona Rider leading a star-studded international cast.

In an interview with EbMaster, Javiera Balmaceda, Amazon Studios’ head of Local Originals for Latin America, Canada, and Australia, shared her excitement about the upcoming series adaptation. According to Balmaceda, the production strives to stay true to its Latin American origins. She expressed her enthusiasm over showcasing the region’s rich talent pool, not only in acting but also behind the scenes. This includes directors Fernanda and Francisca, as well as production designer Rodrigo Bazaes, who has received a Platino Award for his work on “El Conde.”

She emphasized the importance of portraying not only the local population but also the heart of Allende’s narrative. The series structure offers an opportunity to delve more extensively into the story, which depicts the Trueba family over several generations in post-colonial Chile. It combines elements of magical realism with political and personal hardships. The focus is on Clara’s psychic talents and Esteban’s tyrannical rule, examining themes of love, power, and perseverance against the backdrop of societal and political upheaval.

A large portion of the cast is made up of actors from Latin America. Among them are Alfonso Herrera, known for “Sense 8” and “Ozark”; Dolores Fonzi, star of “Blondi”; Nicole Wallace, actress in “Culpa Mía”; Juan Pablo Raba, famous for “Narcos”; and Fernanda Castillo, who has appeared in “El Señor de los Cielos”.

“Forty years after its initial publication, Allende’s debut novel, ‘The House of the Spirits,’ is set to become a series on Amazon. Eva Longoria will headline an exceptional creative team for this project. Allende expressed her hope that everyone would enjoy it. Unfortunately, scheduling issues have prevented Longoria from taking on a larger role as originally planned. However, she has remained actively involved in the production process, offering valuable guidance and collaboration.”

I’m thrilled as a fan to be part of bringing Isabel Allende’s extraordinary storytelling to life through the adaptation of her iconic novel, “The House of the Spirits.” It’s an honor for me to work alongside a brilliant international team of award-winning artists who are equally passionate and deeply connected to this novel. Glen Basner, FilmNation CEO, and Courtney Saladino, FilmNation’s SVP Television and Executive Producer, shared this excitement in their joint statement.

“The House of the Spirits” is one of the most recent prominent Latino productions on Prime Video, featuring a diverse range of projects such as the Mexico-set action thriller “A Billion to One,” Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles’ “Animal Race,” and the continuation of the beloved Colombian series “Betty la Fea” titled “The Story Continues.” Almost 30 countries have adapted this successful US series based on the original.

As a movie critic, I’ve been impressed by Prime Video’s investment in Chilean productions. They’ve brought us the successful series “El Presidente” and “La Jauria,” and the action-thriller franchise “Sayen,” helmed by director Alexander Witt. With Fabula producing, we’ve seen two sequels, “Sayen: Desert Road” and “Sayen: The Huntress.” In my opinion, these productions showcase Chile’s unique storytelling abilities and keep viewers engaged with their captivating plots.

Balmaceda spoke, expressing his belief that all the foundational work accomplished during the pandemic is now bearing fruit. It may seem that we’re not taking on as many new tasks, but in reality, we approved a great deal and are now bringing those projects to life; we’re moving forward with full force.
