Previous Steam Record Was Broken in Less Than a Month. The New One Is Over 38 Million Gamers Playing at the Same Time

Update (September 23)

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experiences under my belt, I must say that witnessing such astronomical numbers on Steam is nothing short of mind-boggling. It was just yesterday when I was reminiscing about the days of dial-up internet and waiting for hours to download a game, now we’re breaking records left and right with millions of simultaneous users!

Steam has broken its own record for the most users online simultaneously, reaching a staggering 38,367,277 at one time. The platform experienced a significant boost in activity over the weekend, surpassing the previous end-of-August record by an impressive 300,000 gamers. This suggests that we might soon be celebrating another all-time high.

Original news (August 26)

A staggering 37 million gamers played simultaneously on Steam last weekend, setting a new all-time high for user activity, surpassing the previous record by nearly a million players within just under six months (according to data from SteamDB).

On personal computers, Steam continues to reign supreme as the leading digital distribution platform, even with increasing rivalry. Two extra occurrences might have spurred more user engagement during the weekend.

Remarkably, this title from Game Science studio outperformed games like Counter-Strike 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Palworld, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. As of now, this Chinese action RPG continues to be the most played game on Steam and the most frequently bought premium game (in theory, “Black Myth Wukong” surpassed “Counter-Strike 2”, but it should be noted that the latter is a free-to-play game).

Absolutely, it’s not just Black Myth: Wukong that’s drawing a crowd to Valve’s platform. Games like CS 2, DOTA 2, Naraka: Bladepoint, PUBG, and even the notorious banana game continue to have large player bases as well.

“Another potential factor contributing to the record-breaking activity is the Gamescom 2024 event, which set new records for itself in its history. The opening ceremony took place on Tuesday, with the event lasting until yesterday. It’s during weekends that most players tend to play games on Steam, and it’s on these days that the platform has surpassed both recent and previous records.
