Preorder Studio Ghibli’s Grave Of The Fireflies Steelbook Edition For Only $22

This summer, a beloved Studio Ghibli film will return as a print: Shout Factory is set to launch a Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray of Grave of the Fireflies on July 8th. Unlike many Ghibli movies, this 1989 film directed by Isao Takahata may not be suitable for all audiences due to its mature content, which includes graphic depictions of blood and violence. Set during the final stages of World War II in Japan, this dark journey is rated PG-13. The Limited Edition Steelbook version of Grave of the Fireflies is available for preorder at a discounted price on Walmart and Amazon. If you prefer, you can also preorder the standard edition Blu-ray for just $18.

Unlike most Studio Ghibli films that delve into fantasy realms and carry environmental messages, Grave of the Fireflies stands out as it’s based on real-life events during World War II, recounted by Akiyuka Nosaka who was a survivor himself. The story revolves around Seita, a 14-year-old boy and his younger sister Setsuko, who are orphans grappling with hardships in the Japanese countryside due to food scarcity, harsh treatment from relatives, and bombings by Allied forces.

This movie is unsparing in its themes, yet remains a timeless animation masterpiece with a potent underlying message. It offers brief glimpses of joy amidst the grim narrative, so buckle up for a stirring and emotionally charged ride.

Compared to earlier Steelbook releases from Studio Ghibli, the packaging design for Grave of the Fireflies seems more similar to last year’s The Boy and the Heron release. This is because it shares a single-tone background color style that was also used in the 2012 Blu-ray release of Grave of the Fireflies, which has now received a new Steelbook edition. However, previous physical releases of this film have been out of print for quite some time.
