Many scary witch movies come to mind, like Suspiria and The Witch. But in the 1990s, witches were often portrayed differently in pop culture. The 1993 film Hocus Pocus was a fun, family-friendly take on the idea, and The Craft showed what happened when you crossed the wrong group of alternative high schoolers. Even on TV, shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Charmed offered lighter, more humorous versions of witchcraft, though they still included supernatural elements.
As a total film buff, I remember Practical Magic being a huge deal in the ’90s! It was based on an Alice Hoffman novel and starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters using witchcraft to deal with a really awful ex. Surprisingly, despite the serious subject matter, it’s become a beloved rom-com of that decade. And now, over twenty years later, Sandra and Nicole are back for Practical Magic 2 – it’s based on Hoffman’s sequel, The Book of Magic. They just dropped the first teaser trailer, and you can check it out below – I’m already excited!
Griffin Dunne didn’t direct the sequel; Susanne Bier did, working from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett. The new cast includes Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod, while Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest return alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
