In March 2025, Prabhas’ pan-India action epic “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” was the most-viewed movie on mobile streaming services in India, as indicated by Nielsen’s recent Mobile Audience Report.
The movie directed by Prashanth Neel is currently available on JioHotstar and has been ranked among the best, sharing the top spot with Netflix’s Tamil comedy-drama “Dragon.” This underscores the increasing demand for content in multiple languages throughout the subcontinent.
Nielsen’s research shows that the seven main streaming platforms like Prime Video, JioHotstar, MX Player, Netflix, SonyLIV, and ZEE5 are hosting a varied content scene, primarily characterized by regional productions and international shows. The rankings are generated using data collected passively from Android devices owned by users aged 18-45 in urban areas with over 100,000 inhabitants.
JioHotstar has become the leading platform, taking seven out of the top ten spots for movies and holding several places in both the original and non-original series rankings. This impressive performance demonstrates the platform’s diverse content approach and its competitive stance within India’s bustling streaming industry.
In the original programming category, MX Player’s “Aashram” held onto the number one spot, with JioHotstar’s “Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar” coming in second. It’s worth mentioning that Netflix’s Korean drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines” managed to secure third place, showing their growing success in offering K-content for Indian viewers. The enduring appeal of “Stranger Things,” which landed in fourth place, highlights the ongoing global popularity of Netflix’s signature series.
On JioHotstar, the rankings for shows not originally produced showed a clear preference for well-known TV shows. At the top was “MTV Roadies,” followed closely by long-running Indian dramas such as “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai” and “Anupama.” Even in ninth place, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” demonstrated that high-quality Western content maintains a strong fanbase on Indian streaming services.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I’ve been diving into the fascinating world of streaming content in urban India. The data I’m referring to is from March, covering viewership across major cities like metro and mini-metro areas, as well as Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The rankings are based on a composite metric by Nielsen that takes into account both the number of viewers (reach) and the amount of time they spend watching (time spent). This analysis primarily focuses on users belonging to segments A, B, and C according to the New Consumer Classification System, which is the primary demographic fueling the streaming boom in our urban landscapes.
As a follower, I’m part of the massive wave that’s shaping India’s entertainment landscape as a mobile-first market. According to PwC, a staggering 78% of my time is spent on mobile apps dedicated to entertainment and media. This trend underscores the importance of the mobile-centric approach advocated by Nielsen in this, the world’s second largest internet market, where mobile internet users reign supreme.
