As a dedicated fan and follower of all things horror, I must say that the news about Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson joining the “Poltergeist” television series at Amazon MGM Studios has me absolutely thrilled! With their impressive resumes in TV shows like “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Supernatural,” and even Marvel comics, it’s clear that these talented individuals will breathe new life into the iconic 1982 horror film.
The “Poltergeist” TV series under development at Amazon MGM Studios has made progress recently.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share an exclusive piece of news: Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson have officially joined the team as writers, showrunners, and executive producers for a project that I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on. The series was previously hinted at being in its early stages back in October 2023.
Details about the specific storyline of the series remain secret, but we know it’s loosely based on the famous 1982 horror movie.
Vazquez boasts a diverse background in television production, having worked on hit shows such as “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Prison Break,” and “Nikita.” Additionally, she has penned stories for Marvel Comics, with significant contributions to the comic book series “America Chavez: Made in the USA” alongside Carlos Gomez.
Thompson, initially known for his writing skills, later became a co-executive producer across various seasons of “Supernatural.” Subsequently, he developed and took charge as the showrunner on the prequel series of “Supernatural,” titled “The Winchesters,” which airs on The CW. Beyond television, Thompson is renowned for his work in comic books, penning stories for figures like Silk, Venom, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man.
Vazquez is represented by William Morris Endeavor (WME), Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson, whereas Thompson’s representation falls under the management of Artists First.
Steven Spielberg’s television production company, Amblin Television, is overseeing this series. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin TV are serving as executive producers. Spielberg played a significant role in the creation of the original movie, contributing to its storyline, co-writing the script, and producing it.
The initial movie revolves around the Freeling family, who unknowingly settle in a house teeming with spirits. When their little girl is abducted by these ghostly beings, the Freelings join forces with a psychic researcher and a medium to rescue their daughter and flee from the spirits.
The movie titled “Poltergeist” turned out to be a significant hit upon its debut. It earned around $121 million globally on a production budget of merely $10.7 million. Notably, it was nominated for three Academy Awards in the categories of best visual effects, best sound effects editing, and best original score. Two subsequent installments were produced in 1986 and 1988. Interestingly, Zelda Rubinstein, portraying medium Tangina Barrons, and Heather O’Rourke, playing Carol Anne Freeling, were the only cast members who appeared in all three films. A remake of the original film was subsequently released in 2015.
