In a recent competition called SeriesMakers, Spain’s production “The Interregnum” emerged victorious and was honored with the Beta & Kirch Foundation Award. This prestigious recognition comes with a cash prize worth approximately €50,000 or $51,000.
SeriesMakers, spearheaded by Laurence Herszberg, the managing director of Series Mania, and Ferdinand Dohna, the head of content and co-production at Beta, debuted in the year 2022 as a dynamic creative project.
The triumphant squad will get an opportunity to collaborate intimately with Beta’s Content and Joint Production Division for creating a pilot script as well as a comprehensive proposal. This collaboration implies that it is highly probable that Beta Film would manage international distribution if the series progresses into actual production.
Developed by Simón Casal and manufactured by Mariela Besuievsky from Oscar-winning Tornasol Media (“The Secret in Their Eyes”), this six-part series fast-forwards to the year 2031, where the European Union is on the brink of a critical vote to endorse an AI-based judicial system that would supersede human judges.
In the heat of their contest, campaign managers Inma (representing ‘Yes’) and Lyda (representing ‘No’), are vying for victory. However, a hidden truth about the demise of AI system creator Alicia could not only shake up the election but also fundamentally alter their very identities.
Casal previously made a movie about AI titled “Artificial Justice,” which was also produced by Besuievsky and came out in the year 2022.
Besuievsky, along with Casal, accepted the award and mentioned that since it was a movie, they didn’t have the chance to narrate the entire story in detail. However, he added that the film was easy to understand and had received great reviews. Unfortunately, it was somewhat brief compared to the extent of the topic they intended to discuss.
Casal observed that due to his experience with SeriesMakers, he mastered the art of structuring a story in episodes and crafting character arcs, distinguishing between different plotlines while interweaving them skillfully to generate suspense. Additionally, he developed a more comprehensive grasp of “how to develop and control a project to make it appealing for global viewers.
Ferdinand Dohna commented that the makers of ‘The Interregnum’ delivered an engaging political thriller that mirrors several intricate matters related to contemporary issues such as artificial intelligence and justice.
These complex problems are presented in an engaging, suspenseful manner, with a made-up EU vote deadline serving as a dramatic countdown for the audience to make their stance clear.
Bovine Tongue),” “Death Takes a Turn,” “Falke Automotive,” “Porcine Dance Party,” “Robbery Alert,” “Inequality” and “The Marvelous Golem.
Three years ago, SeriesMakers was founded with the aim of being the premier mentorship program for newcomer TV creators. With ten projects included in this year’s event and ‘The Interregnum’ winning the prize, we are absolutely thrilled with our achievements.
